Music in Manga talk in London this March

The treatment of music in manga, from J-Pop dramas to Beethoven biographies, is the subject of a talk by anime expert Helen McCarthy on March 5. The event, Music in Manga, will take place at the Kings Place music and Visual Arts centre, near Kings Cross and St Pancras stations - see map.

From a shamisen master to enka singers, from biographies of Beethoven or blues legend Robert Johnson to aspiring classical musicians, pop stars or rock bands, discover how comics in Japan have explored a fascinating range of musical themes with Helen McCarthy. Comics in Japan embrace every subject including music, past and present, Western and Japanese. Manga may be a 'silent' soundless medium, but their authors or mangaka have conveyed the power of music in extraordinarily expressive graphics and compelling stories.
Tickets can be booked at the above page. The talk starts at 1700 and costs £6.50. It precedes a concert performance at 1930 the same evening by the Japanese koto player Michiyo Yagi, though this is a separate event. (The concert can be booked here.)
Helen McCarthy is the co-author of The Anime Encyclopedia and author of many other anime books, including The Art of Osamu Tezuka God of Manga. She presents the longrunning programme of Japanimation screenings at London's Barbican Centre.
