Japanese Animation DVD Ranking, June 29-July 5

With 502,228 copies sold in just its first week, Hayao Miyazaki's Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea film is easily the bestselling DVD of the year so far. It is also the seventh Miyazaki film to claim the #1 spot in the weekly DVD sales charts in its first week. The last DVD to sell over 500,000 copies was Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End Special Edition in December of 2007. The last anime film DVD to accomplish this feat was Miyazaki's own Howl's Moving Castle in November of 2005. Earlier Miyazaki films rode on Ponyo's tail this past week; My Neighbor Totoro hopped from #72 to #25, Laputa - Castle in the Sky rose from #131 to #50, Kiki's Delivery Service flew from #157 to #69, and Princess Mononoke ascended from #211 to #96. All told, five Miyazaki films ranked in the top 100.
The third DVD box for Taiwan's live-action It Started with a Kiss II drama adaptation of the Itazura na Kiss manga debuted at #14 with 5,627 copies sold. The DVD release of Hisaishi Joe in Budokan ~Miyazaki Anime to Kyō ni Arunda 25-nenkan, the 25th anniversary concert of Miyasaki's longtime composer Joe Hisaishi, sold 4,902 copies to debut at #15. It also ranked #5 on the Blu-ray Disc charts. The eighth volume of the live-action special-effects series Ultra Seven sold 2,695 copies in its first week at #28.
