Last Gasp Adds Strange Tale of Panorama Island Manga
posted on by Egan Loo
Manga translator Ryan Sands (Tokyo Zombie) has revealed in a Sunday blog entry that Last Gasp Publishing has licensed and will release Suehiro Maruo's award-winning manga The Strange Tale of Panorama Island. The book adapts a novella from Edogawa Rampo, a pioneer in Japanese detective and suspense fiction. Panorama Island's story centers around an unsuccessful science fiction author who masquerades as the dead son of an industrial magnate. With his new family's riches, he creates a fantastical island to satisfy his desires.
Maruo won the "New Artist Prize" of the 13th Annual Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prizes in April, although he has been drawing manga professionally since 1980. Maruo just launched a new manga adaptation of another Edogawa story ("The Caterpillar") in Enterbrain's Monthly Comic Beam magazine last month. Creation Books published Maruo's Ultra-Gash Inferno in English, and Blast Books published his Mr. Arashi's Amazing Freak Show manga.
Graphic designer Evan Hayden will handle the book's production, design, and lettering for Last Gasp, just as he did for Tokyo Zombie. Sands will co-edit the title with Last Gasp's Colin Turner.
