posted on by Christopher Macdonald
Set to open in Fall, 2006, with more than 230,000 manga
Plans have been announced for the opening of a museum for cultural research, tentatively called the "Kyoto National Manga Museum" (Kyoto Kokusai Manga Museum).
Over 230,000 manga, dating from the early Meiji era to the present, will be stored in the museum. Tha majority of the material was donated by two collectors in the Kanto region.
The museum site is that of an old school, closed in 1992, that will be repaired and renovated for this project. The three story building is eventually expected to have enough room for 400,000 volumes of manga, allowing for the collection to continue to be updated after the museum is opened.
