Free Tibet, the documentary film concert of the first Tibetan Freedom Concert
(PALM DVD release date August 29th)
Palm Pictures, committed to presenting the best and the boldest on DVD, proudly announces the remixed and remastered release Free Tibet, the documentary film of the first Tibetan Freedom Concert, held in San
Francisco's Golden Gate Park June 15-16, 1996. This music event, a benefit organized with the help of the Beastie Boys to raise money for the Milarepa Fund, was the single biggest Stateside benefit concert since 1985's Live Aid. It featured performances by 20 bands united by a common cause, including Beastie Boys, Beck, Bjork, Foo Fighters, Fugees, John Lee Hooker, Pavement, Sonic Youth, A Tribe Called Quest, Rage Against The Machine, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, The Smashing Pumpkins and others.
In May of 1994, the Beastie Boys helped to create the Milarepa Fund with royalty money from Ill Communication. Free Tibet also includes backstage footage and commentaries by performers and audience members, including Palden Gyatso-la, a Tibetan Buddhist monk who survived 33 years of torture and imprisonment in the Chinese gulag. Palden Gyatso-la once said that the Tibetan Freedom Concert in San Francisco was the day he had been hoping and praying for during his many years of imprisonment, and that the power behind that event was the faith it required to put together. Free Tibet provides background on the history of Tibet and the significance of the nonviolent struggle of the Tibetan people against oppression and persecution by the Chinese people.
