Five with Vic Mignogna

by Luke Carroll,

Vic Mignogna is best known to fans as the voice of Edward Elric from the ever popular Fullmetal Alchemist series. He has also done voices for numerous other anime including Dragon Ball Z, Full Metal Panic! and more recently Ouran High School Host Club. During the 2009 Supanova Convention in Brisbane, ANN was lucky enough to get five minutes alone with Vic who gave us an insight about himself and his works.

ANN.au: For those anime fans out there, could you please tell us a little about who you are and what you do?

Vic: My name is Vic Mignogna, I've been a voice actor in anime and video games for a little over 10 years. I've done over 100 titles, some of more well known would be Edward Elric from Fullmetal Alchemist, Fay from Tsubasa Chronicle, Ikkaku from Bleach, Dark from D.N.Angel, Tamaki Suou from Ouran High School Host Club, Kougaiji from Saiyuki, Kurz Weber from Full Metal Panic!, Brolly from Dragon Ball Z, <laughs> a lot of characters.

ANN.au: How did you start in the voice acting business?

Vic: Well you know quite by accident. It was really a God thing. I was doing a video production in Houston, Texas with a friend of mine, and this friend said "hey Vic, you've got a lot background in acting don't you?" and I said yeah. And he said "Do you want to go audition for this place in town called ADV Films. They do this Japanese anime stuff and they need actors". I was like "you're kidding? In Houston? This is awesome". So I went and auditioned, and I got cast. My first role was Vega in Street Fighter 2; and the next show came along and I got cast again and again and again and again and I just kept getting cast. And then I would meet other companies, like Funimation in Dallas, or Bang Zoom in Los Angeles or all over, and just kept working and just taking whatever opportunities I was given.

ANN.au: Do you have a favourite anime character?

Vic: Oh, I can get myself in serious trouble just picking one <laughs>. I could never just one. I love Ed from Fullmetal, it's a great character and a great show. But then you know what, I have so fallen in love with Tamaki from Ouran High School Host Club, but then I love Dark from D.N.Angel. I mean, there is so many characters that I'm very grateful to have been given the chance to play, and I think I would probably be remiss if I just picked one.

ANN.au: Are there any characters out there right now that you'd like to voice, or any sort of "dream roles" that you've got?

Vic: You know, there are always roles that an actor would love to play. There are characters that I've heard of in shows that are still coming that I would love to have the chance to play. Unfortunately I tend to think that you jinx yourself as an actor when you pick out a role when the shows not even been licensed yet. You know, the worse you want something sometimes, you kinda jinx yourself in getting it. There are several shows that I love and would love to be a part of. I dare not say them out loud because I don't want to jinx myself, but we just do our best to audition and see what happens.

ANN.au: Are you enjoying Supanova?

Vic: I love Supanova. Daniel and his staff put on a wonderful event. I was actually the Supanova in Sydney two years ago, had a wonderful time. Daniel over the last year and a half has been saying "we've got to get you back to Brisbane and Melbourne", so I'm very glad that we were able to work it out this year because the crowd has just been awesome, the people are so friendly, and I've had the absolute best time.

ANN.au: Thank you for you time

Vic: My Pleasure. Thank you.
