Voice Actors' Critical Role RPG Livestream Successfully Funds Animated Special
posted on by Lynzee Loveridge
The Critical Role Dungeons and Dragons live-stream hosted and played by some of English dubs' biggest voice actors reached a major milestone, raising an amazing US$5.19 million in just two days. The goal? Create an animated special based on the campaign with Studio Titmouse, the animation studio behind The Venture Bros., Metalocalypse and Star Wars: Galaxy of Adventures.
The Legend of Vox Machina 22-minute animated special will feature the characters from the campaign, collectively known as Vox Machina. The campaign is led by dungeon master Matthew Mercer and played by Ashley Johnson (Pike Trickfoot), Marisha Ray (Keyleth), Taliesin Jaffe (Percy), Travis Willingham (Grog Strongjaw), Sam Riegel (Scanlan Shorthalt), Laura Bailey (Vex'ahlia), and Liam O'Brien (Vax'ildan). Writer Jennifer Muro (Star Wars: Forces of Destiny, Spider-Man, Justice League: Action) scripted the special with the cast. The characters will appear at level 7 when the special debuts in fall 2020.
The campaign aimed to raise US$750,000 by April 18 but has since blown passed that goal by leaps and bounds. When the campaign launched, the Critical Role site added a campaign launch post with the detail that an entire animated series would be the staff's ideal. The staff wrote on the campaign site on Wednesday that this dream is becoming a reality and fans have successfully funded four episodes instead of a single special.
The four episodes will begin before the original campaign and continue into the first season of Critical Role. As additional stretch goals are met, episodes will dive into the Briarwoods arc starting at the US$5.75 million stretch goal. The Briarwoods arc would cover a total of six episodes.
Critical Role was nominated in the Live Streamer category at last year's Streamy Awards.
Critical Role airs live on Thursdays at 7 p.m. PT on Twitch
