Love Live! Sunshine!!'s Aqours, Touken Ranbu Musical Cast to Perform on Kōhaku

NHK revealed the lineup for its Kōhaku Uta Gassen ("Red and White Song Contest") on Wednesday. The yearly New Year's Eve contest pits two teams of female singers (the red team) and male singers (the white team) against each other. This year, the Love Live! Sunshine!! franchise's Aqours group and the Touken Ranbu stage musical's Touken Danshi group will also hold special performances, although they are not competing in the contest itself.
The Love Live! School idol project's μ's idol group previously performed in the contest in 2015.

In this year's contest, actress Suzu Hirose (Umimachi Diary, Chihayafuru) is leading the red team, and Arashi member and actor Shō Sakurai (Honey and Clover, Yatterman) is leading the white team. Comedian Teruyoshi Uchimura is the MC this year, and NHK newscaster Maho Kuwako is announcing. The theme again this year is "Let's Sing Our Dreams." The same theme is being used for the four years leading up to the 2020 Olympics, and 2019 will mark the 70th Kōhaku Uta Gassen contest.
