Cowboy Bebop Character Designer's Illustration Inspires Real Spike Suit

posted on by Jennifer Sherman

Fashion brand SuperGroupies is teaming up with Cowboy Bebop to recreate the iconic outfit of one of the anime's main characters. The online retailer unveiled a real-world version of Spike Spiegel's suit as part of a project to mark the anime's 20th anniversary in 2018.

The anime's character designer Toshihiro Kawamoto drew the special Spike illustration, and the collaboration's suit is based on the illustration. The suit's buttons feature an outline of Spike's Swordfish II spacecraft, and the lining features English words related to the anime.

The suit costs 40,000 yen (about US$360), and people who order will receive a limited-edition bromide of Kawamoto's illustration. The pre-order period opened on Wednesday and will close on December 17. Orders are slated to ship in late March.

Sunrise, the studio that produced Cowboy Bebop, is partnering with Tomorrow Studios to produce an American live-action television series based on the classic anime.

The original 1998 anime series follows the motley crew of the spaceship Bebop as it travels throughout the solar system in search of the next job. The anime inspired Cowboy Bebop: The Movie in 2001. Funimation released the series on Blu-ray Disc and DVD in North America in 2014.
