Hello Kitty Cantaloupes Return in Special 40th Anniversary Packaging

Ever since last year, online retailer Belluna Gourmet has made a summer tradition of selling special Hello Kitty "Furano melon" cantaloupes, each bearing the face of the famous feline. This year, the company is selling the melons again, but for a few hundred yen extra, you can get the melon in a special 40th Anniversary box.
The melons are sourced from Furano, Hokkaido, which is known for its sweet melons. The design is created by carving Kitty's face into the melon while it's still green, before its started growing its netting, which means any of you out there with cantaloupes in your garden can probably recreate this for a fraction of the price.
Each 40th Anniversary melon will retail for a whopping ¥5,000 after tax, and will come in a red and white anniversary box. Pre-orders open May 14, but only 400 are available. Of course, if you don't care about the special packaging, you can grab one of the 300 standard summer Hello Kitty melons for ¥4,780.
