Sanrio's never-ending quest to create everything Hello Kitty may have reached its highest price tag yet. The feline mascot is collaborating with high-end Japanese pearl jeweler Mikimoto. The company pulled out all the stops for the upcoming line which is headlined by 12-strand pearl necklace with 18K white gold, ruby, onyx and diamond accents retailing for about $290,000 (29,085,000 yen)!
Another piece in the collection, a silver bangle, is a little more reasonable at $550 (57,750 yen). A total of 20 separate pieces are planned for the collection which will premiere at Mikimoto's store in Ginza on January 30. A preview of the collection will debut on the official “Mikimoto x Hello Kitty” website on November 26. The jewelry will be made available overseas with pieces first appearing in Paris, France on January 24.
Hello Kitty has gotten her fair share of expensive, jewel-laden merchandise in the past. In 2004, a 41mm-tall jewel encrusted "Queen Kitty" figurine was created for the character's 30th anniversary and was worth $105,655 (10,500,000 yen). A Super Hello Kitty Jewel Doll debuted in 2009 and was reportedly worth $153,000 (15,000,000 yen). The doll was a one-of-a-kind collaboration between Sanrio and Swarovski.
