Doraemon DVDs Recalled Due to 'Condom' Written Onscreen

The Japanese publisher Shogakukan announced on Monday that it is recalling Doraemon TV Series Masterpiece Collection DVD: Yume no Machi Nobita Land Version (pictured lower left) and Doraemon Time Machine Box 1979 (pictured lower right) DVD sets due to an "inappropriate word" appearing in the children's anime series. The word "condom" (コンドーム) appears onscreen for about two seconds in the "Isshou ni Ichi Do Ha Hyaku Ten o" episode of the second Doraemon television series in the sets.
Shogakukan said that someone in the anime's production staff put the word in the episode as a joke when the broadcast version of the anime was originally produced in 1979. The publisher also apologized for the scene and stated that it is reflecting on the situation.
People who bought the Doraemon DVD sets can exchange them for corrected versions. Shogakukan will also replace discs that have been circulating as rental DVDs. The Doraemon TV Series Masterpiece Collection DVD: Yume no Machi Nobita Land Version set first shipped in 2011, while the Doraemon Time Machine Box 1979 set was released in 2009.
Based on Fujiko F. Fujio's original manga series about a boy and his robot cat from the future, the second Doraemon television anime series first aired in Japan from April 1979 to March 2005.
