The name of this manga, "Gintama" (銀魂) , is actually a pun on the Japanese word "Kintama" (金玉), which means "testicles". The kanji for "Kintama" is written with the kanji "gold" (kin - 金) and "ball" (tama - 玉). "Gintama", however, is written with the kanji "silver" (gin - 銀) and "soul" (tama - 魂). Though "Gintama" literally means "silver soul", the fact that it's one letter off from saying "testicles" was intentional as a joke. Such a title fits the manga's strange sense of humor.

Gintama is full of many, many jokes and references to other mangas published in Shonen Jump.
