Phantasmagoria is a theater production technique that projects frightening images through projectors called magic lanterns. A prominent figure in phantasmagoria productions named Étienne-Gaspard Robert referred to his particular magic lanterns as "fantascopes". Audiences were locked inside and sat in complete darkness during the production.

Tylostoma refers to an extinct genus of fossil sea snails. A fossil is seen in the opening live-action sequence and later on in the film.
