The story takes place in 2011: in the episode 3, Madlax's informant mentions that the war in Gazth-Sonika started in 1999 and has been on-going for 12 years.
The design of the skyscraper in Gazth-Sonika is based on a real skyscraper located in Hong Kong. In episode 3 at around 3:34, the picture showing a traffic scene is based on an real location in the Causeway Bay area of Hong Kong.
The country of Margaret's residence, Nafrece, is a parody of France (whose name was intended to be an anagram of France). The Eiffel Tower can be seen in the background of some scenes, such as in episode 14.
The tune that Margaret was humming to herself in the flower field in episode 24 is actually the theme song of Madlax, 'Hitomi no Kakera'.
