On May 2010, following numerous rumors and reports of Megan Fox being vocal against Michael Bay, Paramount Pictures opted not to keep Fox in the film. Gemma Arterton, Bar Refaeli, Miranda Kerr, Brooklyn Decker were initially rumored to replace Fox before Paramount confirmed Victoria's Secret model Rosie Huntington-Whiteley as the new female lead. It was revealed on June 2011 that Steven Spielberg himself fired Fox after she compared Bay to Adolf Hitler during an interview.
Tony Todd, who previously played the voice of The Fallen in Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, was rumored to appear in this film as a human character.
The film is loosely based on two story arcs from the original Transformers animated series: "The Ultimate Doom" and "Megatron's Master Plan".
Ironhide's death by disintegration is a reference to Cosmic Rust, a chemical reaction that affects only Cybertronians and was first seen in the original Transformers animated series.
At the NEST hangar, a private jet with the code "4500X" is seen in the background. This is the code number of Michael Bay's private jet. The number was also used on Blackout's helicopter mode in the first film.
Due to Leonard Nimoy's involvement in the film, there are some Star Trek references. In one scene where Wheelie and Brains are arguing, an episode of Star Trek is airing on the television. While preparing the Space Bridge, Sentinel Prime says, "The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few." This is a quote made by Spock in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan.
Despite being written out of the script after Megan Fox was fired, a photo of Mikaela appears on Sam's dresser in the film.
Francesco Quinn, who voiced Dino, died of a heart attack a month after the release of this film.
