Reki Kawahara's Sword Art Online light novel series has sold more than 20 million copies worldwide. The series' first volume, which debuted in 2009, has itself sold more than one million copies.
Within Japan, the series has sold approximately 13 million copies. The additional seven million comes from other countries, including the United States, United Kingdom, China, Korea, Thailand, France, and Russia.
Kawahara first published Sword Art Online on the internet under a pseudonym. After he won the Dengeki Bunko prize in 2008 with Accel World, Dengeki Bunko published Accel World in February 2009 and Sword Art Online in April 2009. Kawahara will begin a new Sword Art Online arc that continues past his original web novels this year.
Sword Art Online has two television anime adaptations, an anime special, and an anime film. It has also inspired multiple manga series, games, and a virtual reality demonstration in Japan.
Yen Press publishes the Sword Art Online and Sword Art Online: Progressive novel series and their manga adaptations in North America. Aniplex of America releases the anime. Skydance Television is planning a live-action television series based on the novels.
