Japanese Man Charged With Uploading 'your name.' Film Online Illegally

Shizuoka prefectural police charged a 54-year-old male living in Fujisawa, Kanagawa prefecture on Friday on charges of violating the Copyright Act. According to prefectural police, the suspect allegedly uploaded Makoto Shinkai's your name. (Kimi no Na wa.) anime film illegally using a file-sharing service. According to police, the file had a high video quality, and had Chinese and English subtitles.

The police's "cyber patrol" division had been investigating the suspect since July. Police conducted a search of the suspect's residence and searched his computer at that time. Police added that the suspect had used the "Share" file-sharing program to upload the film and other works between March and September. Police suspect he also uploaded albums of artists Kazumasa Oda and Miyuki Nakajima illegally during that time.

Police also stated that the suspect admitted to the charges by saying he used a file-sharing software to download the files and then distribute them.

your name. held its world premiere on July 3 in Los Angeles during Anime Expo, and opened in Japan on August 26. Funimation will screen the film theatrically in an Oscar-qualifying run from December 2-8 at Los Angeles' Laemmle Music Hall, followed by a wider release in the first quarter of 2017. The film stayed at #1 in the Japanese box-office for nine consecutive weeks. As of Monday, the film has earned 17.19 billion yen (about US$163.7 million), 67 days after the film opened. The film is now the fourth highest-grossing anime film in Japan, the fifth highest-grossing Japanese film in the country, and the ninth highest-grossing film of all time in Japan.
