Unfortunately, this is what current VR can do. You stand in place and wave around a glitchy sword. Its an alpha, so obviously it would get better, but you can't fix the standing in place issue. Even a VR headset like the Vive would only let you move around in a small boxed area.

It's alpha footage, I'm sure that they'll get things working better. There are solutions for the standing-in-place issue, like the Virtuix Omni "treadmill" that would allow movement outside a small box. I assume that when they say special footwear to track movement, this is the type of solution that they are referring to.

All of that said, I think it is a mistake for them to release footage before any actual combat is possible. This video is disappointing on all fronts.

That treadmill looks like it could work. The combat does have potential, it just needs more refinement.

I don't know, the treadmill takes up quite a bit of space. Its not a couch persay, but it still demands that you clear a bit of space for it. Not only that, but your movements are still somewhat limited. Yes, you can walk/run, jump, and crouch. You cannot, however, go prone, or roll/roll dodge. It would be like playing an action-rpg or action/adventure game with limited movement capabilities for evading attacks or sneaking.

That gameplay urgh...

It was a mistake to choose SAO as VR subject because all we get are sword swinging gesture, we need something like can cast magics and weapon other than sword.

Something pointed out by Road to VR (correctly or not I can't tell; I'm no translator) is that this demo isn't itself an "alpha" of anything, but rather a simulation of the in-universe alpha version of Sword Art Online (as in, the version of the game prior to the one Kirito played as a beta tester)

@ Nyren:

I didn't see any sign of crouching in that video and jumping looks like it's just asking for trouble. However, despite your pessimism, at least one mildly popular video game has managed to succeed under the limitations imposed.

Hmm. So apparently it really is just a marketing stunt?

Still though, I imagine the amount of hype that's being generated, along with all of the money being thrown at for research, there's no doubt in my mind that this is still a really good thing for VR overall.

Honestly I'm still interested in this type of thing! (Even if I'm not a big SAO fan)
