I remember these rumors, a lot date all the way back from when I was still in grade school. Admittedly I still mash the B button whenever I throw a Poke'Ball. I know it doesn't do anything, but it sure helps with the tension.

The Ditto and Mew theory is still one of my favorites, even if it was debunked. I've read a lot of good fan stories that revolved around the theory, and it's just a fascinating idea.

It's at least miles better than the silly Lavender Town rumor. If I had a dollar for every gaming creepy pasta that I've read that referenced the town's theme song....

Any time Down+B didn't work in Red was because I missed the frame. You will never convince me otherwise. #confirmationbias

There's just enough actual glitches in the game that anything seems plausible.

Having been a Nintendo Power subscriber at the time, I clearly remember that the Dragonite/Yoshi prank never appeared in that magazine. It's actually from the April 1999 issue of Expert Gamer, an offshoot of Electronic Gaming Monthly.

The "Pikablu" ones didn't help, either, when official American trading cards (not the TCG, regular trading cards) were calling Marill "Pikablu." I have some of the cards from the first movie, in which Marill was named, that still call it Pikablu.

As an interesting aside, speaking of "Pikachu's Summer Vacation," in the scene when they're trying to pull Charizard out, they forgot to remove Cubone's Japanese voice, so you can hear him saying "kara" (Karakara is Cubone's Japanese name). You can also hear Squirtle saying "zeni zeni ga me" (Zenigami is Squirtle's Japanese name) in the episode where Ash races on the Rapidash.

My firm belief is smashing A after a catch will improve the odds.

The glitch to attain Mew doesn't require that Cerulean City (actually Route 24) trainer specifically, and any escape method such as using Teleport can be used with the glitch instead of flying: http://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Mew_glitch

Haha yeah I did kinda of the same thing with the same thing with B Button as well but it Side + B every time the pokéball wobbled (right-side when it wobbled right, left-side when it wobbled left) and then just B for the catch and I'm 100% sure it worked like a charm Very Happy

Also I like the one with Mew and Ditto with them having such similarities and that Lavender Town music is still pretty eerie...

I know most of these. I totally forgot about the pikablu one, I remember me and my friends were going nuts trying to figure out what it was from. Cause at that point, I don't think gen 2 was announced yet. And Ditto being a failed clone of Mew still makes perfect sense to me, they forgot to mention both Ditto and Mew are the only two pokemon that can learn transform naturally.

I must be the only person that was completely unaware of these rumors, except perhaps the one involving the theory of Ditto and Mew in the Pokémon Mansion.

At least now I know that I can catch Mew even without having to appear at a special event. Razz

Wasn't Mew available behind a truck once certain real-life event-related conditions were met in Japanese copies? I'm sure that's where the rumors came from: People heard about Japanese players getting Mew in a truck in Vermilion City without hearing that it had to be activated via an event. Or was this another facet of that rumor?

Something else I had in mind that's probably not as big a deal as any of these seven: Tall grass was discovered on Route 1 that lay outside where the player character can access. Gossip flew around about what Pokémon could be in that grass and how to get to it. People later looked into it via the "walk through anything" cheat and found that it's just decoration--there is no data for Pokémon encounters there. However, due to the game's programming, wild encounters are still triggered, causing the game to crash.

That sounds like quite the collector's item. If I ever came across one for sale, I'd buy it (as long as it didn't cost like five hundred dollars or something). Not very often you find merchandise of anything named solelyfrom fan rumors that isn't pirated.

Yeah, that one was really weird, as the Marill illustration kind of popped up out of nowhere, before there was any announcement that there'd be more Pokémon in upcoming games. The "Pikablu" stuff would've been a semi-logical outcome for someone who never had the thought there'd be more than the original 151.

Even now, I find genwunners who still would rather believe in "Pikablu" than Marill.

Here lately, the A button works wonders catching Pokemon. You have to hit it on the repeat and it does very well catching them. This is in personal experience too.

In contrast, I have a phobia of pressing B because it might cancel the PokeBall.

Nah, it's just another rumor. There's absolutely nothing special in the code for the truck, it's just there for decoration. I love how they hid a lava cookie under it in one of the later games as a reference, though (FireRed/LeafGreen? I think)

I never liked the fan name of "Pikablu", because it implied it was still an Electric-Type, when it was most likely a Water-Type (and my mind could not conceive of an Electric-Water hybrid). I preferred "Bluchu", because it was a blue mouse.

So Bluchu was the name I used for my Pokémon fanfic back in the day before it became known it was Marill.

I think the word "Pikablu" came about from people who didn't know what "Pikachu" meant in Japanese (or people who didn't know it meant anything in any language).
