There's a sports manga out there called Cross Manage; it's protagonist is a male, but the story is about him being a manager to a high school girls lacrosse team. I very much enjoyed it, and all 5 volumes are available digitally through Viz.

Technically I guess you could count Girls Und Panzer as a sports anime - given their tank battles are a kind of interschool competition.
Although if anyone watches Teekyu for the tennis, they'll be disappointed. But it won't take much of their time. |

I'll add Teppu, which is a MMA manga staring girl fighters. Psychologically damaged girl fighters, but the point still works.

"Softenni" wasn't mentioned... maybe because it has a lot of fan-service? It does have the practices, training camps, and tournament tropes though.

My first reaction was, "Is there a sports anime with a MALE protagonist??"
![]() (Well, okay, I'm not a Free-bie, so most of my sports-anime knowledge is still stuck in the post-Yawara 80's and 90's.) One time we had this discussion, someone brought up whether Kaleido Star counts as a "sports" anime, even though it deals with rigorous athletic circus training and not competition. Otherwise, all the Aim For the Top tropes are there intact, and it's a cute show too. |

Hikari no Densetsu (rhythmic gymnastics) is another one to add to the list. There's no US release just fansubs but it's worth a watch if just to see the gymnastics portions and sheer 80's-ness of it all.

I'd say Saki (aka Saki The Player) qualifies.
It is about girls at high school competing in an inter-school mah johng competition. Has all the classic sports anime features, including the unassuming girl who is an undiscovered star (Saki), and training sessions. Strongly recommended. |

Kenko Zenrakei Suieibu Umisho is the only show in all of anime that is specifically about a girls swimming club, and it's surprising that there aren't more like it. Seems like the sub-genre would be really popular, given the male/female crossover appeal (fanservice FTW).

I wouldn't really count Angelic Layer as a sports manga...it's more fantasy and shojo. But eh, whatever.
Princess 9 is up there as one of my favorite anime. It's SUPER old, but I've watched it like 4 times and still love it. I definitely recommend it to anyone who actually wants to see a great cast of developed female characters (Well, really only the main 2 are THAT developed, but it's still really good) Not an anime, but the manga Crimson Hero is about girl's volleyball. Never did get around to finishing that one. There's also Girl Got Game, which is about a girl disguised as a guy to get on the boy's basketball team since there isn't a girls team (aka, how many genres/troupes can we smash into one manga!) I loved it years ago, but haven't read it in years so I'm not sure if it'll stand the test of time whenever I get around to dusting off my shelves and re-reading it. |

Cross column reference! The only one on here that I mentioned that's absent from Justin's list is Kaleido Star:

LOVE Kaliedo Star! The catch is it's supposed to be for children, so you have to watch it with that fun mindset and not take it too seriously. But even then, it's fantastic. Made me think of Princess Tutu though. Ballet would be considered a sport, yes? Should probably add that to the list. |

Don't forget Hikari no Densetsu.
Also... Teekyu hasn't had tennis in it since... forever. The parallel dimension doesn't count. |

I'm not too big on series involving sports, but I found Ro-Kyu-Bu! enjoyable. I think it might be the only sports series I've actually watched, regardless of the gender of the protagonist.
