I have to admit, getting into this series was REALLY tough especially how lousy the first few episodes were. I'd imagine that's how a lot of peeps felt yet somehow the concept of battling armored singing idols was endearing and had potential. Thankfully it somewhat delivered near the end of S1, and then S2 and S3 so far the show really started to gain a footing.

Probably should be "boring"...

Symphogear's about as unsubtle as anime gets, from the Gurren Lagann-esque ludicrously larger-than-life combat escalation to the absurdly obvious yuri teasing. But that's kind of the point, since it's one of those "basically a giant music video" anime, somewhat like Angel Beats.

The review pretty much covers what makes it ridiculous in a good way. I hadn't thought of the Jojo comparison, but yeah, it's sort of like Jojo with half the MANLINESS taken out and replaced with melodrama. There's slightly more seriousness in later seasons, and better animation, but they certainly don't tone down the ham (that villain in season 2... as soon as you think he can't get hammier, he cranks it up another notch). Aoi Yuuki's singing is a bit rough and overshadowed by that of the other characters, but Hibiki's supposed to be the "everywoman" character, so this may be intentional (she's done image songs and stuff for other anime, in which she sounds quite a bit better).

I love Symphogear, i find it hit the same notes as Nanoha for the most part as "alternative magical girl", it also helps both have Nana Mizuki in them.

Wow, I wasn't expecting to see a review of this.

Yeah, it's not that Aoi Yuuki isn't a good singer, it's that Hibiki isn't that great a singer.

Symphogear has a pretty interesting backstory to it. Basically a music composer was all "I could totally make an anime, how hard could it be?" and brainstormed any idea he could think of. Then a writer friend of his who primarily does video games took those ideas and made it somewhat coherent.

The result is what the review describes: a show that's not particularly great, but awesome. The cast and crew clearly had a great time working on it and you can feel that enthusiasm when watching.

Season 2 is an improvement in every single way, but unfortunately no one streamed it.

After reading this review I think I would have liked Symphogear more if it was a video game. Yeah, it's over the top and ridiculous, but that isn't really engaging when I'm just watching it happen and none of the characters are compelling enough to make me care. Now if it was some sort of Dynasty Warriors-esque game where you punched through hoards of Noise while character songs played, at least then I'd be doing something while the insanity plays out in front of me.

I definitely understand why other people like it so much, though.

I don't care for magical girl type shows, but this one sounds like it's enjoyable schlock. Your review really does a good job at selling it,Nick!

Symphogear is the kinda of show where the creators realized the Idol Singer Power Rangers can't yell their attack names and sing at the same time, so the show just animates the attack names instead. Because it is goddamn important that we know Chris has an attack called "Giga Zeppelin".

How could anyone be mad at a show like that? Symphogear might not be smart, but I agree that it is definitely awesome.

Let's be real, Symphogear's ridiculous brand of nonsense is the real reason any of us actually watches anime.

Just throwing this out here since it's relevant. It seems Crunchyroll should be streaming the first two seasons of Symphogear 'soon' (they already have season 3), and that would be great news for the franchise.

One of my favorite anime ever, for exactly the reasons pointed out in the review: It may be a clichéd mess, but by George is it an awesome clichéd mess.

Hopefully this review and its recent addition to Crunchyroll, and its currently airing 3rd season can inspire someone to bring us a home release here in the States!

This anime is one of those that I'm not sure what to feel about it. I love the action, it looks gorgeous, and the songs are fun, but the story is bland at sometimes frustrating.

However, it's an addicting to watch series and I just could not put it down. There's definitely a lot of fun to be had with this series and I think that this review gives a pretty good rundown for anyone interested in the series.

Seeing as Funimation has the streaming rights to the first season, I would be so glad if they could get past the song licensing issue and release on home video in the west.

On another note, I just have to say that, unlike her performance in Madoka as the titular character, Aoi Yuuki does so much better here (and in Rokka as Fremy) and she's quickly climbing the list towards being one of my favourite voice actresses.

This review just moved Senki Zessho Symphogear to the top of my backlog of BD's. Just got to finish the last four episodes of World Conquest Zvezda Plot.

I do not like the idea of having this series outside of Japan. If they keep the songs in Japanese, I'm fine with it, but it sounds weird if they speak in non-Japanese and then sing in Japanese. Not that it never happened before in anime history, but most of the time, the Symphogear studios did not use pre-recorded songs for the scenes, the seiyuus record the songs in every new scene again (except season 1, ep.3 and 4), giving the songs a more natural feel. This is best demonstrated in the first episode of GX (^^ GX), where our trio literally scream while singing in the heat of action. I do not want the songs to be in English (even though there is one entirely in English), especially since Nana Mizuki is singing here and has the highest number of songs in this series.

Another problem are the licenses for each song. Most if not all Nana Mizuki songs are protected from copyright, that's why most of her songs are not available on YouTube. Licensing every single song might cost too much. The worst case that could happen if the English voice actresses try to sing in Japanese, but that's never going to happen.
