If anyone got turned off by the first volume, then they are missing out on one of the best series to come out in 2004. Yes, Paul, it's still very much an acquired taste, but considering that Azumanga was #17 in Newtype's list of the top 25 anime series of all time (as voted by the fans, mind you), a LOT of people (myself included) felt that it tasted good.

And yes, the opening song STILL sucks!

And I'm certainly one of them; the series is definitely one of my personal favourites, no questioning that. But I wanted to be as objective as possible when writing the review, and avoid not taking into consideration the fact that the show does have an odd sense of humour that certainly won't be everyone's cup of tea.

Couldn't agree more. I've seen a lot of anime in my life time and Azumanga didn't grap me as something like Witch Hunter or Wolf's Rain, or even Dokkoida. Repitition (being funny at first, but get old after,i.e. cat) and too cute that it get annoying. Recycle jokes

I have mix felling about this. As a male, I had a hard time relating to school girls, but that's just me, and I didn't expect the story to go anywhere (because it's not suppose to) and again a lot of the jokes (beach) are reused. I'm not a big fan of excel saga (another fan favorite)

It's wasn't acquired for me. I liked it straight off the bat, and love this show to pieces. The nature and theme of the show is a bit reminiscent of my days in high school (though nowhere near as zany, and not all my friends were girls). Again, you did a good job of trying to remain as objective as possible, and I commend you, Nagi.

And by the way, that was a quick wait for the next review. When you said it was coming "soon," I though it'd be at least another month... Anime smallmouth.

Well, I'm on volume 5 and the stories just keep getting better Very Happy
My favourite episodes are the "Sports day" and "Summer Holiday" ones - There's a total of three of each in the series. The Disc 5 holiday - Entrance Exam Summer School is one of the funniest episodes i've seen outside of Excel Saga or Puni-Puni.

BTW, even the Kamineko scenes aren't truly repetitive; while it's true that a lot of the time, sakaki gets bitten, sometimes the cats run away!

I just love this series Very Happy it's second only in my love of anime to Maria-sama ga Miteru. As a 40 yo male (Married for 21 years Razz) I find male orientated series a turn-off because of lack of character development. As much as I like Dragonball the Manga, I find DBZ the Anime a bit of a bore - all fighting, no real story.

I don't understand how people can dislike Azumanga Daioh. The fact of the matter is, the characters, animation, setting, and stories are just so cute and lovable, it's really just impossible to hate it.

You said it didn't grasp you like Witch Hunter Robin and Wolf's Rain. How did those grasp you, exactly? Witch Hunter Robin is quite possibly the most boring series I've ever seen. Horrible plot, slow as molasass, and some of the worst characters ever. Wolf's Rain, while enjoyable, is not one I can see myself watching again any time soon. Azumanga, on the other had, I could easily watch in entirety once a month and never grow tired of it.

In regards to being a guy, aside from the occasional breast size gag, the characters are such that you can relate to them no matter what your gender is.

Actually, no, it's not fact. It's opinion, something drastically different. Wink

The trick is, taste is subjective. Different people like different things. Some people find Azumanga's comedy irritating, others love it. Neither one's wrong. Some people love the deliberate pacing & character development of Witch Hunter Robin & Wolf's Rain, others hate it. Neither one's wrong.

Personally, I love all three. Someone else might hate all three. Neither one's wrong. It's all a matter of personal enjoyment.

Yes, I realize that it's all opinion. There will always be someone who hates what you love, and loves what you hate.

But I can't see how this applies to Azumanga Daioh. I feel that everyone should love it.
