I hope they just don't make hello kitty movies and try to make their own stuff like show by rock.

Oh, cool to see them getting back in the film business again. Lately when movies are based on their characters it's done by other studios. What was the last animation they made themselves? As a fan of the company, I'll likely go see everything they make.

What's the difference between the two? Both the Hello Kitty animations and the SB69 anime are based on already-existing Sanrio characters. You are aware Show By Rock is an adaption, right?

I know show by rock is a adaption but that is a newer idea. I just don't want to make hello kitty movies over and over.

Ah, I see. Well, they have a bunch of characters to choose from, even if they haven't made merchandise of a lot of them in years.

I personally want a movie about Gudetama, that would be amazing. We have shorts, sure, but I want something more than that. He's pretty popular right now anyway.

but the new company plans to make works with a budget of around 20 billion yen (about US$164 million).
This could prove to be quite the problem... Just ask Dreamworks, and their budgets were smaller than this. $135 million was what they generally were until they decided to shrink them due to their box office struggles (Penguins-until it blew up overseas, Guardians, Turbo, Peabody, all bombs).

$164 million would mean they'd need around $400 million worldwide before they start making money.

Well, as long as they can continue to make shows like Show By Rock, I'm all for it! Smile However, I think that $165 million budget has the potential of becoming Sanrio's huge source of regret should things go wrong...

I wonder if they'll try to get their Jewelpet series to America with this method. Like either compilation films of the TV series or with original films.

I always wondered why a big company like Sanrio never tried (and if they did try, didn't succeed) in getting the Jewelpet franchise more internationally known. I've always thought it was very charming, so I'd be happy if American kids could grow up with it somehow too.

Well, let them make them, then. Razz

Seriously, I think we're guaranteed at least one Hello Kitty movie just as "flagship" for Sanrio to announce their corporate status to the US (just like we didn't want the Battleship movie either, but Hasbro insisted on announcing themselves to the world), and will generate slightly less interest than that 80's Saturday morning series.

That's the problem of thinking things will be exactly as popular in the US as they are back home.

There's one problem though, TV execs no longer think anime is viable in the US outside of the Toonami crowd. Plus, Cartoon Network doesn't air anime anymore if it's not based on a toy, and is a co-production of either Canada or Korea.

Seriously, there is no point with this Show by Rock anticipation crap. That is not even a mainstream title compared to Hello Kitty being a noticeable icon in the west. Though yes, they cant juggle with Hello Kitty for every single project if they are actually striving to compete with Hollywood.

You forget that Disney and 4k media are still doing this even though they are adapting past titles.

I just want a second season of Show by Rock and a Larimar plushie in her normal Jewelpet form or figure in her human form, making large scale films is a terrible idea, Sanrio is extremely niche amongst all but young girls in the US.

Where on Disney television is there anime? If I recall correctly, their last anime was Naruto Shippuden on Disney Anime hyper, which was eventually sold to Toonami when it became clear that it was not as child-friendly (or rather, parent-friendly) as initially thought.

In any case, Sanrio is diving headfirst into a shark tank here...not only because US$164 million is a massive budget (even Disney does not spend that much on its movies, usually), but because Hollywood/Burbank/Glendale is something of a tribe. That is, people from everywhere on the ladder at every major studio know other people from other major studios, and competition there is more friendly than most other businesses. This means an outsider like Sanrio may not be welcome, especially because some of these studios, like Time Warner and News Corporation, are information gatekeepers and have the power to make an organization they dislike become invisible to the public (like what the Academy of the Arts did to the visual effects people in the Rhythm & Hues incident). This is why you almost never see a new company pop up, and when you do, they almost always receive support from a major studio. The Nut Job is the only recent example I can recall of a wide-release film created and distributed solely by new companies (and was made with less than a third of Sanrio's proposed budget).
