That's unexpected. I didn't know that it did well enough to warrant a sequel.

It was announced that it continues where the movie left off so I'm guessing a new movie

I attended the event, and the footage they showed did not seem to have enough 'content' (it seemed to focus heavily on too few events) to justify being a television series continuation, unless they purposefully only showed clips from the first few episodes. The animation style was also very reminiscent of the recent film (the series itself had amazing animation to begin with, but the movie's quality was on another level).
So, my money is on a film sequel.
However, during their final stage speeches, Angela's guitarman referred to the follow-up project as 第2期, which means "Season 2", so it's very much up in the air about what they mean.
As for the comment about not realizing it was doing well enough to merit more media, the movie was purposefully open-ended, all but requiring some form of continuation. That there's going to be a continuation isn't surprising in the least.
Of note, there will be a new comic series picking up where the movie left off (or possibly just focusing on the aftermath of the movie?) starting publication in "Aria" (which has run K series manga before) in the February issue out at the end of December.

K is a paint-by-numbers franchise so of course they're going to make of much of it as they can.

I hope you're right... but it seems like most of the time I see a new project announced for something and they don't specify what it is, the project ends up not being an anime.

YES! I finally got to buying the dvd/blu ray viz set this summer and watching the show for the first time, and I loved it! Didn't see the movie but I am so glad there will be a season 2.

It was only a matter of time before it was announced. With all the holes that the overall series gave us [tv/movie/manga/novels], I personally believe there could be enough material for another TV series.
*mentions movie stuff here*
The movie introduced us to the Green King. And gave us a replacement for the Red King. Two other kings need to be replaced (Gold, Colorless), and another isn't introduced yet (Purple...? *forgot color mentioned in the TV series*).

... yes and no. The characters and situations are somewhat derivative or similar to other popular series, but in a way that (at least so me) feels so refreshing... more nostalgic than tired. It reminds me of '02-'08 anime, which I love. I guess the familiarity + the unique twists + the amazing visuals and music is why I like it.
... I knew they had to make more because we have to see Kuroh and Shiro reunited. Obviously. (/Ishipit)
Honestly? Screw the current TV season. There's goinna be more K, more Black Butler OVAs, a Love Live movie or something, and a new crack manga spinoff of Code Geass, what more do we need?
