Ah Tokko... The manga is actually even worse in that regard, as it stops when Shindou gets his powers. So the anime actually had more content in it.

I remember being disappointed that Fruits Basket just sort of ended. Thankfully, I came to realize that I didn't actually like the series that much--just a handful of characters--so I don't feel burned.
Ah, Gantz. Some of my favorite characters don't even get introduced until about 10+ volumes in, which the anime (and the films, right?) don't cover. I recall the series meandering quite a bit, probably because there wasn't somewhere to go at the time of its creation. I would actually like an animated reboot, but I doubt that'll happen.

Highschool of the Dead
Quote: | These are important questions for inquiring minds but the manga's creators continue to take extended breaks, delaying any potential anime sequels. |
Yeah, we've had about 1 chapter in several years, and it was completely pointless. My guess is the author just gave up and wrote himself into a corner. It's not like he can actually truly threaten any of the main group with death, they're completely plot-armored; there's just zero tension.
Berserk
Quote: | Those hopes were dashed when Studio 4°C decided to revisit the same early storyline again for its CG-blended anime movies. |
And they managed to bring absolutely nothing of substance to the table. The one thing they managed to do better than the TV series was be in CinemaScope, congratulations. Other than that, the color design was bland and muted, the pacing and characterization were rushed and not fleshed out, the music was forgettable, and the CGI just killed any of chance of it being something appreciable. Yes, the TV series is cheap and relies on stills, pans, and zooms far too often, but it's still a better production.

I'm surprised Berserk wasn't number one.

Surprised at the lack of Shikabane Hime.

One particularly egregious example of 'hanging' endings was last season's Magical Warfare.
And hoo boy what a mess that show was, still wondering why I didn't just drop it back then...
Very much doubt the light novels were that bad. Even the author took distance from the anime adaptation.

In fairness, the Claymore anime did an excellent job of wrapping up its prevailing story arc. (My evaluation on this seems to be a minority opinion, however.) Despite that, I still think it deserves a spot on the list.
I have seen all but one of the other ones and can't argue against the inclusion of any of them, though there were many other good options, too. (The Twelve Kingdoms most immediately springs to mind, especially for the part of the story involving Taiki.)

I still don't know why I watched that all the way to the end... I knew it wouldn't get any better.
I'm not sure if it was ever very popular, but Kaze no Stigma ends with a cliffhanger. Granted it is because the author died, but its still frustrating that the story can't be concluded.

The actual title for this should be "7 Frustrating Anime Cliffhangers Because The Manga Was Still Running." so really couldn't show a conclusion because there wasn't any then. Another one to add would be Deadman Wonderland.

Seriously? That was your take away from the end of Cowboy Bebop, that Spike's fate was undecided?
Look, I know that Watanabe was coy about it in an interview, but come on. We all know what happened. That star was his. Must everything be spelled out?
You know what's a frustrating cliffhanger? The end of Giant Robo: The Animation or Shin Mazinger.

.hack//SIGN completely skips the final battle. They get to it, and then they just skip to the epilogue.

Ugh. Hate cliffhangers. When it's a anime based on a manga, and they just run out of Manga to work with that's one thing, but knowing there won't be a season 2 is very annoying. Pumpkin scissors anyone? Same with D.Gray Man. Seriously. When is the next chapter coming out?

For the most part you're completely right, except Darker than Black was an original series.
I definitely agree on Deadman Wonderland, even though I didn't particularly care for that series.
I don't know if it would count but Gatchaman Crowds comes to mind. It completely skips the final battle and leads into a epilogue that explains nothing. Although it is apparently getting a sequel which might solve these problems.
Also Valvrave falls into this category as well. The series wraps up and makes complete sense but they never really explain what happens before the flash forwards it's the only series I was so invested in that I actually wrote a fanfiction to explain my theories.
