What happen, why was the Japanese broadcast censored version given to Viz instead of the uncut material??

What the heck? This is very strange. As far as I know other R1 distributors have not had similar issues obtaining the uncensored/Japanese release video for their localized releases.

I guess it is a good thing that I imported the Gargantia JP sets instead of waiting for Viz's release.

While we always strive to use the Japanese retail masters, it was not possible for the release of Nura.

How do they know it's not possible when they just found out?
Did they already exhaust all options?

And why the heck wouldn't it be possible to get the home video masters? O . O

It's confusing because I find possible reasons like it being too expensive or because the licencors wouldn't provide it to be utter BS....

I really liked the show but I'm a grown adult and expect that I'm paying for uncensored products...

Sure they had. Are we forgetting Funi and Sankarea or Sentai and Kohime Musou?

Why be surprised or confused, just take it at as Japan's next step for R1 licensing restrictions.

That's it? "Oh yeah, it is censored. Oh well. Just look up some screenshots of the home video version and PRETEND it's uncensored when you get to the naughty bits!"

Sigh. Another victory for fansubs, another strike against Viz.

FUNi offered Sankarea disc replacements with the uncensored episodes on them, BTW.

Answerman had an article that talked about how some companies jack up the price of certain parts of licenses. Which makes it unprofitable for a licensor to obtain at that point.

Gosh, I wish I remember the article since he specifically pointed out a show with such an issue which is why it was never fully released state-side. Might have been D.Gray-man.....dunno.

Anime's getting to be like video games; you have to wait until the thing's out to learn if there's some horrible problem with the product that should keep you from buying it. Pre-orders are foolishness.

If you can't license the uncensored version, what's the point of licensing the property at all?

What happened with Sentai's release of Koihime Musou? As far as I'm aware, the only obvious issues were crappy subtitle translations.

I think they should be forced to refund or replace this for everyone. The assumption is that dvd/blu ray retail releases are uncensored versions, so how they just go and say whoops after the thing has been released for a few months?

Also how the hell can Viz not get the rights to its own property? Correct me if I am wrong but the only shows Viz releases are ones that it basically owns. So what exactly is blocking you from releasing this uncensored.

Like someone else said, Funi just made a mistake and eventually issued it uncensored. Did not hear anything about kohime Musou.

I think thats the problem, the uncensored version isnt available cause (supposedly) the Japanese licensors didn't let them have it.

Someone else here mention that it could be a way to further prevent reverse importing, which does seem like a possible reason to me

Are you talking about the fact they own the manga, too? Im no expert on this issue, but I think it's safe to assume the rights for the manga and the rights for the anime are COMPLETELY different things. Manga licensing and anime licensing are also probably handled by two different teams entirely within Viz too

I found this link to a gallery that details the extent of the censorship of Nura courtesy of a poster in RightStuf's forums. WARNING: Link NSFW.

Funimation hasn't released sankarea uncensored yet. They first offered disc replacements then cancelled that then recalled the release. We're still waiting for the uncensored set to be up for pre-order.
