So basically Aplix no longer wanted to have AIC on its finance sheets.

Gotcha.

Of course not counting the costs and logistics of keeping the studio in business and paying employees their salaries.

That seems like a pretty big haircut to take though. You buy it for $8M and decide to basically give it away 2-3 years later? Just how badly is AIC doing right now?

How much debt was AIC carrying to warrant spending less than an Apple TV on it?

Dunno how badly AIC is doing, but several senior producers (Jiyuu Ougi, Norio Yoshida, Yoshiyuki Matsuzaki, Toshiyuki Nagano) jumped ship last year. That can't be a good sign.

Basically, the producers responsible for most of their hits and who own the relationships with animators are no longer at their disposal, so significant rebuilding may be required.

Last summer, AIC made a big deal out of their new workflow system that would allow them to air short series (starting with Super Seisyun Brothers and Pupipo) within three months (!) from the start of planning, so I wonder if this is the direction they're going in.

What does this mean for the rights of their shows?

Wow. So did they throw in a set of dishes as well?
Well, didn't think I'd hear about AIC. I often wondered if AIC was even still active. But hell, since their Tenchi days, hasn't been much from them. Unless anyone can elaborate on this.

There hasn't been much from AIC in terms of original IP. Like many companies, they changed strategies when late night anime became their primary focus.

Nevertheless, they're one of the most prolific studios when it comes to anime adaptations.

They still do plenty of anime. They did Acchi Kochi, Strike Witches 2, Persona 4, Haganai, the first Oreimo, and Date A Live the past couple of years. They did Aura, Daybreak Illusion and a Persona 3 movie recently, and Date A Live 2 is coming in April. There is also the new Strike Witches, though I don't think its been confirmed that they are animating that yet.

Man I would have loved to buy AIC for that price. They are one of my favorite anime studios and a bit under the radar, even if their shows aren't. Although for some reason the selling for that price reminds me of the $1 bet in Trading Places.
