Yeah, it's a C when compared to say... AKIRA, Spriggan, or Steamboy. But that's a ridiculously unfair comparison. For a TV series, it's definitely near the top.

Yeah, I agree with the first post, I don't really get this review at all. Now, granted, this is one of my favorite series ever and I'm a bit of a Fate franchise fanboy in general, but I've never heard anyone call the animation in Fate/Zero less than amazing. It is one of the prettiest TV anime ever produced, regardless of what you think of the story content.

As to that - the first episode is dull and overlong. But from then on, I really can't see it ever being boring or dragging. There's a lot of dialogue but the writing is fantastic, and in a lot of ways those scenes are often better than the action scenes. Episode 10 (I think it was 10), spoiler[where the three King characters sit down, drink wine, and talk about what it means to be a king] is one of my favorite single 22-minute episodes of all time. It is absolutely brilliant. And almost every scene between Kirei and Gilgamesh is fantastic as well.

I know people who don't like this show, opinions vary and I understand that. But giving the animation a C just seems completely out of touch with reality to me.

A C in animation? WTH!
Fate Zero has one of the best animations for an anime series since it's made by the same people who did the Kara no Kyoukai: Garden of Sinners movies.

Ufotable IMO is the 2nd best studio in the industry when it comes to pure animation quality, so this review is just mind boggling. Its a 25 episode series that has movie quality animation, and Carlo considers it worse then your average low budget harem show for animation? I just don't get it.

Everyone else is complaining about the low score you gave the animation, but I'm complaining about how you thought David Earnest's performance was good.

For real? Seriously? He sounded like a bored college student doing a really bad William Shatner impersonation. Easily the worst actor in the dub by far, if you ask me. Confused

On the other hand, though, at least it's nice to see that I'm the only person in the world who didn't think Fate/Zero was "TEH GREATEST THING EVAR". Sure, the animation and music were nice, and I really enjoyed Rider and Waver's story, but other than that, I found it incredibly over-rated, slow, boring, and thought that a good majority of the characters were complete and total ass-hats.

I watched this on Neon Alley the same time I watched Accel World, and I'll be frank: AW was better. Cool

I couldn't agree more about episode ten. It's a fine piece of writing. I love the idea of these three monarchs meeting and philosophizing together, each carrying the knowledge that they are breaking bread with people who they're going to have to kill later. There's an archaic nobility to it that fits beautifully with the characters' ancient origins.

One of the things I love about Fate/Zero is how different its priorities are from Fate/Stay Night. It refuses to just rehash the plot of the original, following Saber and her master and using the other servants as a serious of boss fights for her to overcome on her way to the grail.

Instead, Zero treats everyone in the Holy Grail War like an equal combatant, taking the time to show all their stories and motivations. Granted, some are more interesting than others (Caster in particular really overstays his welcome) but it makes for a much more dynamic story. This does mean we get a lot more exposition than action, but I'm fine with that: the strategic planning and alliances are a welcome change of pace from other series for me.

It's also a very smart move from the writers' end. Fans who have seen Fate/Stay Night already know how this Holy Grail War is going to end, so focusing on the battles won't make for a compelling story. Instead, they make sure every character matters and give them each compelling motivations, so we become more interested in how the war plays out than who the ultimate victor will be. It's a difficult trick, but this show pulls it off.

I have to say I think Carlo is way off base on this review. And regardless of his opinion of the writing, I'm amazed he would rate the animation so low.

I like many others here am just confused as hell that the animation got a C. It really makes no sense. Much of the series better looking then some movies out there and it keeps that quality all the way through(first episode not withstanding)

Also you need no proof more then going back and looking at how horrible looking the original Fate/stay Night from studio DEEN was. Fate/zero and even the Unlimited Blade Works movie doesn't look as good as Fate/Zero.

I know that people are entitled to their own opinions but I have seen reviews from Carlos that ranked animation B or A that were no where even close to Fate/Zero but hey that is why they are opinions.

So again, trying to shock people is more important than writing good, not biased review.
Lets move on and not feed trolling reviewer ego.

The big disconnect here is you thinking a good review needs to be not at all biased, which is really the opposite.

Judging by the score you gave fate zero, it's as if you compared it to a high budget movie, instead of other series... Even with that, this review can only be considered a troll. How far does your scoring system go? If a high budget, beautifully animated series gets a C for animation, what does a generic low budget series score?

It's pretty laughable that the story gets such a low score too, but since that's more down to personal opinion, i'll let that one go.

I'm perfectly aware that every review is subjective and there is nothing like "objective review".
It doesn't however mean that writing extremely biased review in order to create strong, negative feedback is considered "good review". On the contrary, this is perfect example of trolling.

Carlo gave his reason for the animation score in the review. He said there were too many long static talking head shots, poor CG and poor 2D/3D integration.

Really liked Fate Zero.

I also didn't get why the animation was praised. It really was nothing special.

The review is right. There are a lot of boring static shots and some of the 3d looks pretty bad. Really the animation in this show is pretty bland.
