Surprised there was no mention of Canada in that article... They are still in many malls. They did however, clear out their trial run of gaming merch a few years ago. Sure didn't last long!
HMV was the first place where I started to pick up my anime VHS, actually.

Yeah, there are HMVs all over the place in Ottawa. I'm pretty sure the ones here still have video games available, though I could be mistaken since I don't think I've ever bought a game there.

Hopefully things turn around, though it's tough to be in the physical media business these days, I guess. Things even got bad enough for them to branch out into books, of all things, and I know book sales don't make much money for the retailer (just look at all the bookstores selling candles now).

Chapters has always sort of had a mini Hallmark section, with a greeting card rack, little gifts, stuffed toys, etc. I mean, whatever keeps them afloat and lets them still sell books! At least they ARE a bookstore that seems to be doing well, unlike a certain America Sad

I'd been expecting this for quite some time and so not surprised. I can't remember the last time I bought anything in one of their B&M shops, or even their online shop. Indeed I would check them out for price then shop round for a better deal. Rumour has it that the administrators have had a few businesses from round the world asking about a takeover, so it might be rescued from death yet, but regardless a lot of the B&M shops will disappear from the high streets of Britain, no mistake. a lot more people out on the dole here. Sad

I did buy things from there occasionally, but only things which had been out for ages and were super cheap. As for MVM stuff, I just wait till they put it as their deal of the week...

I think that's what was doing them in. Trying to be all things to everyone they ended up being neither for no one. It's what killed off Woolworth's. HMV should have stayed just as a music shop as it seems that only niche businesses can survive the economic climate on Britain's high streets these days.

BREAKING NEWS
It's been just announced that Blockbuster has just called in the Adminstrators today as well. Another one going down in flames along with 4,190 jobs at 528 shops.

With Borders and Zavvi already gone there'll be nowhere to buy anime on the high street if HMV goes too, and for that matter you can only purchase tankobon in Waterstones now. At this rate it'll be online only soon, and that means US imports for most of us who buy DVDs.

I hope they get bought up by someone and start trading normally again. If they don't, that's £16.50 worth of HMV credit I'll never get to spend.

I remember buying anime my whole life from HMV, before switching to online sites not too long ago---I must say that I would hate to see them go. They got rid of all video game sections and I doubt the CD sales are keeping up with digital downloads---hope they last another few years (because sooner or later they will go out of business)

Where's your stiff upper-lip? The situation is not so dire as to be intolerable. Why, I espied a copy of The Last Unicorn on sale beside the cashier of a garden centre only two years ago!
