They forgot Chocobos/Moogles.
FFXI was indeed similar to EQ which I enjoyed both for those reasons. I guess sadly that kind of MMO can't happen anymore in this market. |

Vivi said it best, and they've all forgotten it. "Traveling with your friends gives your life meaning." That's what makes a Final Fantasy game. |

Yeah it makes me sad that a FFXI/EQ type of MMO just doesn't seem to appeal to the MMO crowd of today. I wonder if Everquest next will be like the original game and kinda rekindle that style of game but likely it will try to do what many recent MMO's have been doing. I enjoyed XIV(yeah it's launch was a giant mess) It was interesting to see the game grow and change so dramatically once Yoshida took over. I mean the game literally went from giant broken mess to a fun and genuinely interesting game and the main reason it still continued to have issues was because of the tech it was built. Hence the entirely new game engine and server tech A Realm Reborn is gonna have, I'm looking forward to the relaunch and knowing Yoshida he will not release the game until it's ready and we won't have another mess on our hands. The big question is if new people will bother to try the new version or won't bother given the negative press the original had. |

Chocobos and Moogles never existed in the Original Final Fantasy on the NES. Besides, they forgot one little thing that the successful Final Fantasies have that the new games fail to achieve: tradition. The classic turn base style that has been used from FFI to FFX gone. The subtle little references are now painful reminders of better games that the players would rather play. Here's a huge thing that they listed that makes them sound REALLY stupid: GRAPHICS! GRAPHICS DIDN'T BECOME A THING TIL FF7. The graphic don't matter, the story is far more important. Final Fantasy VI/III has the same graphic as IV/II, but they both had great stories. In my opinion the graphic were the best in VII to IX. |

Are they talking about mmo final fantasy or final fantasy in general. If the latter I think they forgot storyline and characters. Final Fantasy is not Dragon Quest, storyline and characters of supreme quality are king.

No, it doesn't; FF6 was leaps and bounds more graphically impressive and advanced than 4 by a mile. FF was always about pushing the graphics, even back then. Just compare FF4's intro to FF6's intro. 6's use of Mode7 was far and away more impressive than what FF4 did with it; not to mention the actual sprite and enviorment detail being far greater in 6. 6's graphics were amazing for it's time. |

If those are the elements that make a Final Fantasy, then no wonder the franchise has gone downhill. They've ignored substance for the sake of style.
As someone who's put hours into making the perfect Final Fantasy Tactics Advance party, who's slogged through the first two Final Fantasies on the GBA, who loves Dancing Mad and who pulls his hair out at Final Fantasy III and IV (for all of the great ideas buried under good ones), I say: you should have listened to Sakaguchi. Lost Odyssey and Last Story both did better jobs at what Final Fantasy is supposed to be about than the past three Final Fantasies. I think Square needs to re-think their franchise. EDIT: I used the word "quality" instead of "substance". No, I don't know how I made that mistake, either. Last edited by Levitz9 on Mon Nov 26, 2012 10:34 pm; edited 1 time in total |

Ummmm substance IS quality actually. Having pretty graphics does not mean it's full of quality. It just means it's nice to look at. If it had quality than substance would be a part of that. I also think the past 3 CORE FF games have been fine. Forget about direct sequels which FF never had before X and forget about the MMO games. Just the core games which would be X, XII, and XIII. Those 3 were pretty good all around game wise. Forget about X-2 and XIII-2 and the MMO's. |

But aren't those qualities that define most RPGs anyway? |

You should like XIII-2 then because it has a really great monster building/breeding system. You can spend hours evolving and training the monsters and getting the specific stats/abilities/movies on them from breeding with other monsters and so forth. The only downside is the game's probably too easy for the player to be bothered to do so, and you don't have to do all that much with them actually beat it. Though I guess that applies to Pocket Monsters too, since you can just plow through the game with your starter Pokemon and beat it easily that way Ah well. Wouldn't mind a stand alone game build entirely around XIII-2's monster system. |
