I agree wholeheartedly with the review, with the one proviso that there is one flaw in the US box: it's not as good as the Japanese box. Though the US production is still excellent, Sony poured their budget into this show like mad and the original has amazing voice acting and superb opening and ending themes, which were all cut in the dub-only US box which doesn't include the opening or ending credits. So the US box is excellent, but the Japanese version is even better!

It's a shame really. As much as it sucks to see the 1963 edited down so much to be acceptable to America, at least it could be explained by the fact that there was still anti-Japanese sentiment and there was strict broadcasting rules that the Japanese version would clearly break (although the Japanese version does exist, it's just Japanese-only, there are a few people who own the Japanese version on the Astro Boy forum I go to).
You'd think that in 2004 that there would at least be a proper sub available. Unfortunately, fans outside of Japan are left with a hack job of a dub with no hope for a proper sub. Not trying to be a dub hater or anything, but along with a lousy campaign, it's easy to see why the 2003 version bombed outside Japan. If the Japanese version is anything near as good as the review states (though I doubt it's A+ caliber), then surely it should be worth the $600+ that has to be forked down to get the entire series. |
