Isn't quite common, in Japan, for employees to work hours of overtime, for which they aren't compensated? I hope it goes through and they receive all of their unpaid time. These are the guys who actually make this stuff, why screw them over?

Because they can. These guys are doing grunt work that requires no skill (digital painting of backgrounds), so even if they were to quit, they could be easily replaced. In animation, much of the work is routine, hence the potential for exploitation. Anyone who can trace pictures (that's about every kid in kindergarten) is capable of handling low level work, so the tendency is to exploit unskilled, uneducated staff who have no confidence in themselves and have nowhere else to go. |

The extra money is more than likely to cover the costs of a drawn out court case (research and lawyer costs) rather than adding on more punitive damages, though I could be wrong.
