I dunno about everyone else, but that manga cover for "Best Childrens Manga" doesn't look like something aimed at kids...

Different standards between US/Japan. It's published in the same magazine as Ojamajo Doremi, Cardcaptor Sakura, and Tokyo Mew Mew were. |

I'm flabbergasted at how Vinland Saga (at least the 'prologue') has not been made into an anime yet. I'm also bewildered that the manga hasn't been licensed over here yet. I guess the the companies don't want money considering how popular the manga can be. It's got friggin vikings, it sells itself.

The worst of all is that it is actually popular. |

yeah but given the past couple of chapter's story content it doesn't belong in a children's category, even with the differing standards i don't think spoiler[a storyline about a teacher who may have been molesting his former students] is children's material |

In some cultures a storyline about a guy punching another guy wouldn't be children's material. Go figure. |

Whew, if Watashi ni XX shinasai is children's book no wonder they grow up so fast.

That was my first thought too...and then I thought back to some of the books I've seen shelved in the children's section recently - The Book Thief, The Hunger Games, Wildthorne...all great books, yes, but all with plenty of content that could be found not child friendly. It really is subjective. |

Does Japan not have a difference between children and youth/YA/teen? Hunger Games isn't really a kids' book, it's a YA book. Which is what this manga looks like.

I don't think they do, really - and the whole "YA" categorization is relatively new in terms of publishing. (There weren't even really children's books until the mid-Victorian era, at least ones for pleasure reading rather than educational.)
From what I remember of the title in question, here it would be more in the "middle grades" category, largely because of the age of the protagonists and kids are generally willing to read "up" (about older kids) but not "down." (about younger ones) And you're right, Hunger Games is considered YA (although elementary and middle schools in my area are learning that the hard way since apparently it would kill people to read the book before giving it to their kids), although Collins' previous series was middle grade and just as violent. I guess we'll all get our questions answered when Kodansha releases it in English, though, eh? |

Eh, I've seen similar stuff before. Especially in manga which is usually more graphic than anime.
It depends what age you consider "Young Adult". This manga is published in a magazine aimed at 8 - 14 year old girls. It's the magazine the Pretty Cure manga adaptions get put into, as well. |
