Remember when moe was the cancer that was killing anime?

Apparently it ended up not only saving the anime industry, but revitalizing other industries too.

It's a shame Upotte can't drive up firearms sales in Japan, but I wouldn't doubt some people making more purchases because of that show.

That would be...difficult.

Though I guess it could drive Airsoft sales.

Yeah, revitalizing BD sales, making BD a viable market for anime, pumping millions of dollars back into the industry and setting sales records. Hopefully all that goes away soon.

Inspiring a bunch of young girls to get into music? Definitely. K-ON's a very inspirational and influential show for people of all ages. Can't argue that.

Guns are illegal in Japan, so illegal purchases I suppose. Otaku will go to any lengths for their girls, though.

Well, not exactly. There are quite a few rifle and shotgun owners in Japan, even though getting a permit takes a bit of work.

You have to take a written test, a shooting test and a mental check-up, and participate into a coordinated practice once a year in order to not lose your license. Oh, and the police will show up from time to time without notifying you in advance to check that you store the gun and ammo properly - in two separate locked containers.

You can't get a permit for handguns or assault rifles, though, so Upotte! falls a bit short there.

This drop in average price is largely credited to large fluctuations in the value of the Japanese yen.

more like the weakness in the US dollar. The yen would actually be higher if the BOJ didn't occasionally print more

practically defeats the whole point of ownership...

I thought that would have been understood in my post. Though, I could see otaku buying those rifles in airsoft and decking them out in Upotte themes. For those in countries where they can legally own those rifles, I wonder if any will be influenced to do because of the anime/manga. Threads on Upotte, and the amount of gun information that comes from them, is wonderful. It's been giving really good insight to little quirks the characters have, might in the same way Strike Witches incorporated history, planes, and people into those characters.

Anime has shown time and time again to get people interested in new hobbies and crafts, it's really cool everything I see people influenced that way. Thought I doubt shows like Sora no Manimani had much affect on astronomy, mostly due to it be a side issue of that show.

Though I'd say Upotte is much more of a joke show based on gun anatomy jokes and trivia, so it's clearly aimed at people who already are gun otaku. With Strike Witches and, say, Hetalia the trivia more like creeps up to you.

It's interesting how differently different cultures view guns. In America they're associated with patriotism, in Japan with nerdiness. And in countries like mine where there's mandatory military service talking about them is more or less frat boy culture.

Yen and Swiss Franc both have increased in value drastically over the past 4-5 years because of global economic conditions. That is, versus the dollar and just about most other currencies. I wouldn't say it's just weakness in the USD.

No, i only remember moe saved the anime industry at the time of financial crisis.

Also, it's not really the otaku who's buying the Guitar.

companies need to take note, manga/anime can help help you sell products. Kami no Shizuku influence wine sale.

Uppote won't have the kind of clout needed to pull something like K-On did with music, not including the kind of restrictions guns have in the first place. Just lacks that endearing attitude to really push a connection. And their facts are wrong. Turns of real gun fans. They're the ones you want to draw.

Muttan, Gitah and Elizabeth are not amused.

And don't doubt the likeliness of firearms-related tie-ins. Witness the Ikamusume flash hider.

And a couple years from now, trash landfills will be filled with still-good-to-use starter guitars.................... because it wasn't really the spirit of rock 'n roll that called their souls! Laughing
