With them seemingly caught up on Morita-san Wa Mukuchi, I'm not seeing much I'm interested in(really just Poor Poor Lips). If they don't pick up the pace I'm going to have to switch to the $10 subscription.

Who is even as we speak negotiating to expand rights. They need to show interest outside North America, so are asking people interested in getting access to like them on Facebook and follow them on twitter. Its @JManga_official so don't spam the poor soul who picked the @JManga twitter handle before JManga was founded. |

no, they are not the same people as Crunchyroll. JManga is a Japanese company [I am currently cooperating with them so it's first hand info].

Well, whether JManga is "popular enough" in North America for whichever of their herd of publishers they are negotiating with on a region expansion, that's $$$, not FB likes or twitter follows. JManga's argument would be, "so, d'ya want some additional money?" So whether the current levels of like and follows are good or bad depends more on whether fans outside the US actually do something about it, or if they prefer to just complain. If those fans take the bit between their teeth and organize a social media campaign to like on FB and follow on twitter, the current numbers makes their job that much easier ~ since JManga needs to demonstrate geographic spread of potential demand, its not the absolute numbers JManga is looking to but the geographic distribution, and its easier for fans to effect the distribution when starting from a smaller base.
That's what Crunchyroll said since before launch ~ they said that they were doing work for the project, but not on like the Crunchyroll site where they actually acquire digital distribution licenses. And when it went to beta, the story here said said:
... so any work for hire that Crunchyroll may have done on developing the original JManga site would have been commissioned by Toppan.
Its a weird system where you buy a subscription, the subscription gives you a certain number of points, and the points are used to buy volumes. You can have a 1,000 points per month subscription or a 2,5000 points per month subscription (plus bonus points up front and monthly for early subscribers), and only subscribers can buy extra points. So its not "all you can eat" like Crunchyroll. However, unlike Crunchyroll, if you drop down to free member, you keep access to volumes you already bought. So its not a digital magazine, like SJalpha, its like an online stored digital collection of tankoubon. Its definitely priced like downloads, not like streaming, at $5 for most volumes. When they launched the prices were basically print prices, but since then they've trimmed the prices to be more competitive with things like Viz's $5 ebooks at B&N's online shop. |
