Obviously, the upcoming TV series increased interest on it.
Maybe that could mean a prolonged 2nd season! |

If the 3 previous volumes had sold around 5 million copies and the 4th gets 250k the first week it's released, wouldn't that mean that a large percentage of people who read the first (or two or three) no longer have much of an interest in reading more?

Sales on first week were actually a bit lower. They didn't buy now, but it doesn't mean they won't ever buy /read it. If having next volume is only a matter of visiting next bookstore and you know they won't be sold out quickly you don't feel any pressure to have it right now.

"5 million copies"? No. There is obviously a mistake here. Thermae Romae is very popular, but Saint oniisan is the bestseller king among the seinen-manga, and even it doesn't have that sort of sales numbers for only 3 volumes. Maybe 2 million is much closer to the truth.
And why would the anime announcement increase interest? That is ridiculous. Then what about Uchuu kyoudai, Kingdom, Sakamichi no Apolon, Mysterious Girlfriend X (and so on)? Will their sales go up too? |

Apparently, according to this Square Enix producer, the pre-anime interest spikes up for their manga too. |

I don't understand who would buy the 4th volume of the manga based on an announcement alone. Why not the first volume? Some small number of die-hard otakus isn't enough - we are talking about hundreds of thousands here. And Thermae Romae is not otaku-related in any sense.

rather than the mini anime series I believe it's the movie (with lots of famous actors) that is increasing interest in the series (the movie is the one that made it on the cover of the 4th volume, so for sure they believe it to have more potential for (commercial) success) or it's simply the fact that the series is constantly getting more readers and with this volume more readers than before have bought it right when it first came out (volumes 2 and 3 also did sell very well when they were released, and volume 4 has got a limited special edition, motivating people to buy it fast).
No, it's true. The series as a whole did sell more than 5 million copies. And since Saint Young Men did outsell it this year, I suppose it's overall numbers might be even higher. |

It just sounds too unrealistic to me. Not that I wouldn't like it, mind you, but last year I used to follow the manga sales closely and I clearly remember Thermae Romae being in the rank of 500 000 copies per volume sold or slightly more. The numbers just don't add up to 5 million. This is a proof from ANN itself:
And this is the second one:
The first volume went on sale on November 26, 2009 in Japan, so by what miracle the first 2 volumes sold 4 million copies in the fiscal 2010 when the whole series sold only 1 million throughout the next year? |
