okay....that plot sounds complete BS. its completely stupid how their changing kanadas character and from the sound of it he's now a adult NOT a teenager which is stupid. second of all the colonel TRIED to destroy tetsuo from the way the plot sounds it makes it sound like he's helping him instead of trying to waste him. im not sure what to think of kei yet it could go eith- *sees kristen steward casted as her*.......forget what i said...doomed to fail. i cant remember much of akira since the last time i saw it was when i got the blu ray so i cant remember much except for some tibits of info but not much. overall i think this is a horrible idea it could of turned out good but at this point its doomed to fail. but just for the heck of it i'll go out and see the film and make a proper decison on it then but from the looks of it i doubt my opinion will change.

Man I haven't even watched the original and I can tell this plot is completely whacked up from what it should be.

Sounds like another anime rape by Hollywood. Doomed to fail. Just like Dragonball.

White washing the cast.
Kristen Stewart? I'll pass. Ken Watanabe? I can see that working.

Set in New York, wait what? Again? Why New York? What's wrong with Tokyo?

Keep the story as is or don't do it.

That's my take on this.

as the anime had plot holes and no appearance of Akira (yet spectacular animation & ost), IM sure this American version with its Japanese named leads will kick ass, and feature the notorious boy/man (depending on producers) in PG-13 GLORY and be in 3D?

think ill read the 2000 page manga. then watch my bluray.

He's a little old to be playing a teenager.

I think people complaining about the Akira live-action movie either have nostalgia goggles on, or they have some misguided notion that every movie based on a japanese-originated license needs to star asian actors - which is ridiculous. No offense to George Takei, but there is no reason why a hollywood version of Akira needs to star asian actors.

Now do I think this movie will be terrible? Yes. Akira (the manga) is just too long for anyone to adapt properly into a motion picture. That is the only reason why this movie was doomed from the start. It has nothing to do with them casting white actors or changing the character's roles. They could have copied the animated movie's plot but then people would have realized that the animated movie they watched when they were 12 was actually terrible.

But hey, this movie actually has Akira in it, unlike the animated movie.

Man, so much hatred over 3 paragraphs of text. It's just brief plot summary. Don't start nitpicking over minor sentence structure issues and then claim they will somehow "make this movie fail."

If this is going to be a "mature" live-action movie, the characters are going to have to believable.

While tons of anime and manga series have main characters as highschool-age teenagers, it generally doesn't work very well in live-action series.

For example, the main characters in Gantz are highschoolers, but even the Japanese live-action movie used actors in their late 20s instead.

Imagine a version of The Matrix starring only 14 year olds. Yes, maybe it sounds cool, but unlike in anime and manga, it's not realistic.

Also, it's not like there's loads and loads of talented, well-known Japanese actors that can fluently speak English here in the US. And managing an entire film production in Tokyo may significantly increase the budget and may give little benefit to the actual movie. Not to mention all the legal paperwork needed before you can film there...

EDIT: big typoe fix'd

Watanabe Ken being in this has peaked my interest just a little bit, and considering all the big names listed here it seems like they should be taking this movie relatively seriously. Still, it's just so hard to imagine this being anything but bad...

penguiontruth, this whole shtick is getting old. You're not an idiot. You know this is an adaptation. You know that there will be major changes. Stop pretending you don't.

Juvenile delinquency is a key element of the story of Akira.
