I'm interested in what the review for the second set will be compared to this one. In opinion, the second half of this series felt stronger than the first one, maybe because of the bigger appeal from the other girls. Although, admittedly, the delivery of Rihoko's storyline could have been better (say, a more suitable ending?).

The series, as a whole, is of particular taste. Not many will take to it as well as others. Some may even skip one set entirely in favor of the other.

Good timing on the review, considering I just finished the first girl's arc last night. Just based on the first arc, I find myself agreeing with much of the reviewer's remarks. I too noticed the animation seemed to be well done at times, and even the fan service was kept down to a "what you don't see" cheesecake level. At times the main two characters had me cringing with their antics and I asked myself "would two people actually act like that?" Then I remind myself that this is fictional and more wish fulfillment than anything and I then ask myself "would someone actually want to meet a girl who acted like this?". Before internalizing an answer I just tell myself, "shut up John and just watch the show". Wink

For me, the most likeable girl was Kaoru. And both Kaoru's and Tsukasa's (last girl) arcs were also my favorites, having the most drama as well, with Tsukasa's definitely topping it off. The others were enjoyable and sweet, though quite mellow. I also like the timeskip that Haruka's arc and Tsukasa's arc ended on. Their epilogues were nice and satisfying surprises.

Personally I'd give the series a B+

Isn't it supposed to be "Miya" not "Maya"?

I liked Amagami SS, overall. The low-ish fanservice actually helped, because I don't like it when T&A is in your face or the whole point of a show. The art was solid, the girls were good looking but fairly realistically drawn, and it's structure meant it lacked much of the filler in such shows. Of course, it also meant I had to sit through the same painful scenes over and over, but the novelty of the structure was such that I was never really bothered.

I thought Sae's arc was the best of the first three, as it progressed naturally and had a sweet ending. Now Sae herself is highly unrealistic in terms of her personality, and putting her in costume after costume did get a bit old; it's like they wanted to run through as many fetishes as possible. But the spoiler[wedding dress] was beautiful and the spoiler[dress she wore to the cinema] had incredible seductive appeal.

Fridge Logic time. One of the biggest problems is that by adapting a dating game structure it leaves itself open to massive attack, not because of its structure but because of the very nature of a dating game. Essentially, by showing that you can hook up with just about anyone it rejects the notion of "true love". Even worse, since each girl gets their own arc where the guy loves and helps them, in the other five arcs he doesn't love them, he doesn't help them. spoiler[Haruka is always insecure and lonely, Kaoru doesn't have anyone to help her with her mother, Sae will be cripplingly shy for many years to come.] The other three girls have their own problems that only the male lead can solve. So keep that in mind when you watch the show.

But like I said, overall I liked Amagami SS. It wasn't great, but I would give it a straight B, which is pretty high for someone who doesn't like the genre.

This was actually one of my favorite animes that was based on a dating sim. I really enjoyed that each heroine got their own complete story. I liked Kaoru's arc the best. This is quite a charming show. Don't let the review discourage you from watching it. B+

I'm also not a fan of the 'omnibus' dating sim format that Amagami uses. I'd much prefer the Kimikiss method, where they split the main character of the game in 2 different characters for the anime, allowing more romance without needing to reset the story over and over.

That said, Kaoru was excellent (which is obvious, as she's voiced by Rina Satou).

I said that I would buy this if/when it came out, and I had the money, and I will. This is my favorite show from last year. I didn't even know this was out yet - I had heard that it was licensed, but I never knew the DVD was out. Already have the RightStuf page open to buy it.

Kinda sad there's no BD option though. It aired in 720, so I don't see why they couldn't. Not that it matters much to me, since I have no way to play BD's, but I've been spoiled by simulcasts and fansubs. And since I'll inevitably only watch these on my computer monitor, the small size will not be so fun.

I liked the idea behind the show, but I thought the execution left something to be desired. Four episodes felt rushed and unnatural, things happenned because they were supposed to happen, not because that would be the natural flow. It would be much better if they had just cut the number of girls to three (first, second, and last which I thought were the best stories) and lengthened the stories to eight eps so they could add some valid conflict. The other three girls seemed almost like filler, they would work for the game, but did not translate well for the screen, spoiler[ and the "just friends" ending with the clumsy girl was rather annoying (note I am using clumsy rather than heavy since I did not see anything remotely unnaturally heavy about her), but this applies to the second set so it is out of scope for this review].
