I REALLY hope this does well. I am definitely looking forward to its open launch. I am really surprised how much Japanese publishers have invested in this and the effort they are putting in. I wish there was a question asked about "simulcasting" though. Like when Naruto launches are they going to be just releasing from the start of the series and going forward, or will they be bring out the newest chapters in Weekly Shonen Jump in Japan too.
And I was really interested to see if they would say anything about One Piece since they used a rather recent image of the manga, that has yet to be released here in the US at least, on their JManga advertisements. |

I'd prefer newer translations, but I guess I'll have to give with reworked ones. Cutting cords with middlemen like Viz seems most appropriate and logical.

I'm really tired of companies citing this incredibly lazy metric. Why don't we hear US comic companies citing Comic Con attendance as proof of increasing US comic fans, despite lagging comic sales? |

Comic-con isn't about comics. It's about multimedia franchising. Comics being turned into movies is a much bigger deal there than actual comics, now. It's just a general marketing party trying to tap into "nerd cool." One example standing out in my mind is this ICV2 picture with the caption of: "Mainstream television was widely present at Comic-Con this year, as at this CBS display." One could say that, to a certain point, anime cons have a similar effect, but to a lesser degree. |

How many American comics/movies/etc. costumes do you see at anime cons now? Not talking random storm trooper or klingon, I'm talking: Harry Potter kids, Jack Sparrows, etc. And that's not even touching on the volume of video game fans. How many kids sit in a video game room playing Halo all weekend until the night time "rave" is going on? How much "steampunk" is all over cons right now? Or "gothic lolita"? Or whatever other random interests people want? Anime cons haven't started pulling in Hollywood types (yet, ugh), but bands (at least half the time with no stronger link to anime than "they're Japanese", and in some cases (Jonathan Coulton) not even that) and video game people HAVE started taking over conventions. There are a lot of people going to anime cons that will flat out say "I'm not that interested in anime" or even "I don't watch anime" (but I like to stare at/hang out with people in cosplay). You can argue video games (like Final Fantasy) and related hoi paloi (like Hatsune Miku) have wide crossover appeal, but even if a lot of anime fans like that stuff it's also true that a lot of fans of that stuff don't care about anime. (and all this doesn't even speak to the large numbers of people that show up just for "something to do" over the weekend) |

Almost time for the big leap forward in free legal digital manga.
I liked how several companies did this for a some titles, like Tokyopop, Comic High! to name a few. It was sad when Japan put the hammer down on illegal digital manga sites, but the promise of the legal site, OpenManga, that some mentioned gave us hope. Then I heard that Crunchyroll was planning something too, & tried it out with 3 titles a few years ago. Would be nice if they also had Light Novels, but I am happy to see this finally happen. |
