Ugh, this is going to be absolutely terrible.

This is why I don't bother with movies anymore. I've seen everything already, because all they release are sequels, remakes and comic book adaptations.

Hollywood spin. Give me a break. They are citing a 30 year old film a basis for belief in their ability to create successful rendition of Akira. If that it was the are trying then they should just drop pandering that it is an "adaption" to the fans and change the name Akira.

Not everything in hollywood movies is sequels, remakes and comic book adaptations because some movies, even in this century do introduce characters that just start out in movies. As for comic book adaptations, they're there to increase fan interest in the comics they're based on so as to help the comic industries get a boost in sales, so get used to it, comic fan or not. If you don't want a U.S. "Akira", you don't have to watch it, but I'm sure some people will love to watch it, so don't ruin it for them is what I say.

By the way, most anime so far are based on what's not anime originated (manga and video games for instance) and sequels and remakes do happen with anime from time to time (ex: "Mobile Suit Gundam Seed" had the sequel "Mobile Suit Gundam Seed Destiny"), but you don't hear many people complaining about it, so why complain about hollywood wanting to do more comic book-based movies, sequels and remakes, or are you trying to set a double standard arguing that it's alright for Japan to do sequels/remakes/comic book movies but not ok for U.S. to do any?

Saying most anime is based on manga is not a revolution or shocking truth. A manga getting an anime rendition is damn near expected if the manga is popular enough.

How exactly am I "ruining it for them"? I seriously doubt that my lack of interest in the project will prevent anyone from possibly making the movie or prevent anyone from eventually seeing it if it is released. Smile

You missed my point. It is not a double standard.

I don't want/need to see the remakes/adaptations because I've already seen the originals, or read the source material, and I personally have never enjoyed a remake/adaptation more than the original.

I have not read any manga, so any anime I see that is based on it is new to me. Very Happy

Katsuhiro Otomo gave his blessing to a "re-imagination" of his manga Akira, according to two of the scriptwriters who were involved with the in-development American remake.
Cause he knows they'll f*** it up so badly that his original will be worth even more. Laughing

Are ya talking about Japan? Laughing

Millions of buyers of One Piece manga don't seem to mind the anime.

Besides, the movies will be based on the Akira manga. I doubt many people here have read that (and much of the new anime fans haven't seen the anime film neither), so it will be new to them.

You're forgetting that the manga has more drug abuse, sex and gore, which certainly won't be in the live-action movie and I'm sure the role of the U.S. military will be very different.

Much like Toriyama with the DB movie, I'm sure Otomo doesn't care what they do with it as long as the check cleared.

We'll see. Sounds standard fare for Hollywood. Laughing

Nah, it'd be similar. But it won't be the US's military. Probably blame the Chinese or Russian military. Or blame Canada or Skynet (since it's set in North America). Laughing

Harsh, and with the recent release on BD as well. Wink

I'm sure enough wrong turns will make a right at some point.

I mean, look at X-Men First Class!

Isn't that comparable to to people who haven't read the Akira manga or seen the original film? This adaption would be new to them.

People will doubt it, they will sneer at it maybe, but when the right director, and the right elements come together and that thing happens... then, people are going to be blown away

Such a response being conditional, I might emphasise, upon this hypothesised combination of the right director and the right elements. The degree of "RE-IMAGINATION" that is being permitted calls the likelihood of such a synergy into doubt.

It will become another sort of manifestation of it, and it will be unbelievably cool

No, by that concept it becomes something other than the original.
