I'd like to know how they're garnering that kind of information. I'm sure all stores do it in some format - but to figure out exactly how many are over 50??? Yeesh.

Close, but while Twilight also has a large adult-fan base, it's still mainly female, whereas One Piece is a hit with with an adult-fan base that is male and female (as shown by the "top 10" lists from women in their 20's, 30's, and 40's)

I don't know if the the poll could be bias based on how they did it, but considering how long One Piece has been out in Japan, it makes sense. It's still going strong for just under 15 years in the running, and the fans are pretty loyal. Of course they're all adults by now. I bet the remaining tenth are from the fans with kids.

Or supports the idea that parents buy stuff for their kids.

If they're in their fifties that would most likely be grandchildren, unless they are late parents. But being in my fifties myself, I would guess they bought it for themselves. Wink

One Piece continues to be entertaining.

This really should come as no surprise since this is a really fun title that has a large amount of acceptance in Japan. It's like it's ok for adults to fondly remember DBZ. This is like it's ok for non-nerds to watch Superman or Batman movies here.

On the other hand, it is an older title, so I could see it as less popular with kids. They're more about the latest popular thing so something that's been around longer than they've been alive is less attractive. They don't necessarily want to read/watch something their older sibling or even worse, their parent reads/watches.

One Piece is not a schoolboy story. Luffy was something like 17 at the beginning of his journey & they all were that or older, weren't they? So it's not like we had 13 yr olds saving the universe. Like Seiya, the characters were young(ish) at the outset, but their feats have always been ageless. Each member of the crew is very highly defined in their behavior, but all have grown as fake human beings from their introductions into the One Piece world.

Wow, but not a big surprise most adults will love Piracy concept including myself especially if the author of the manga is very creative.

Heck even ODA set an age limit on being a pirate, you must at least 17 years old, at least that's what Luffy and Ace did, their the youngest as far as i can recall as a pirate captain, other pirates captains were in their mid 30's and up.

My favorite part is the graph that indicates One Piece is catering to the illusive Toddler demographic. Very Happy

Aha, so all the teenagers pirate bootleg scans.

Edit: OK, more seriously, if these are volume sales, it may be that more teenage readers read it in the serial. If many of them don't go on to buy the volumes, while older readers who no longer read Weekly Shonen Jump buy the volumes ... that would bias the age figures.
