Hm, those questions for Furuhashi sure seem familiar.

Those answers, too. Like a lot of other director interviews, he was a little vague. But I'm glad he has a passion for the main theme of the story and is surrounded by folks who know so much about Gundam, as he himself is at least a fan of the original work.

He seems to be know what he's doing, though. The first installment was excellent and I look forward to the rest.

The first episode is only $4 SD and $6 HD to rent on PSN, so if you just want to see it, that's much much much cheaper than buying the Blu-ray Disc.

Not really, since it's basically an import that you don't have to jump through hoops to get a hold of. We're paying the same price as the Japanese are, while getting it at the exact same time as they are. For it to be priced like an American release would be like a slap in the face.

For each winning contestant, does he/she get both prize packs or just one of them?

The reason Japanese releases are pricy is because you are paying for quality that FAAR exceeds anything in the R1 market. That Amazon listing is for a cheap bare bones release. I've even heard that compared to the actual import the video quality differs. You get what you pay for.

...and I didn't even need a stamp.

Odds of winning: finding a beak in my bucket of chicken.

But hey, there's always hope.

Let's look at the logic behind your statement:

The norm, no, the retail sale standard of any disc-based media in the United States & Canada is roughly 50-70% lower than in Japan. That said, cost of manufacture is the same.

The reason why disc based media in Japan is more expensive is because, well, the country's smaller, and only a fraction purchase movies on disc media anymore. The majority of it is games. Secondly, Japan doesn't have a strict MSRP-you might as well ignore that there is one; when something is out, it's completely up to the individual retail to price it as they see fit, granted under the condition that it makes the distributor and publisher profit.

One retailer in Shinjuku could be selling the movie for $15 a pop, brand new, while another in Akiba sells it for $100.

So, please indulge me, where's your logic coming from? Who's getting slapped in the face? Of course, other than us for having a rather strict MSRP system.

Also...isn't Bandai kind of in a rather loopy position cause they're...you know, not selling anything? Somehow I get the feeling that pricing a movie that's under an hour long $50 with barebones extras isn't helping.

That's a myth. I've seen shit in R2 format that you wouldn't believe at how crappy it is.

As for the prices, it's also an illusion. Only importers adhere to the MSRP, and even then, they jack the prices up another good 30% simply because they're a specialty importer. If you were to go to Play-Asia right to purchase a copy of FF13, you'd end up ponying down a $100. Go to a random game store in Akihabara or Ikebukuro, and you'll find new copies everywhere for like $20.

A myth?? Haha! Ya, come over and I'll pop one in for you then we can compare it to an R1 DVD. We can both stare in awe at the outrageously high bitrate. You're theory on games sounds kinda myth-ish, but I know nothing about games sooo who knows...

Ohhh yeah and dont forget that Japanese still include little artworks and trinkets in their releases. Getting first pressings really appeals to me. I like to collect. Fun things like that died in America when Geneon left.

You have some of the facts, but not the complete story.

The bit-rate doesn't really push up the price of the BDs in any way. It does effect the number of episodes on a disc sometimes.

But when it comes to a lot of discs that have the exact same running time, for example a movie, and the same packaging, the Japanese DVDs are still more expensive. A lot of American movies sell in Japan for 50% higher or more than they do in the USA.

This does not constitute the complete story either, I'm just pointing out that your version is highly simplified and incomplete and therefore, ultimately incorrect as an answer.

It's like saying a Ferrari 599 is expensive because it has 12 cylinders.

I think my answer is pretty logical. I'm talking about the quality that goes into the product itself, not just the nicely encoded video. Booklets, artcards, toys, and all that good stuff collectors want. You remember buying nice chipboard artboxes with pencilboards/booklets and a 75 minute DVD for $45? Our prices used to be wacked out too. I can guarantee you that if you pop in one of those old Geneon shows and compare the picture clarity to a recent FUNi release, the Geneon show would win hands down. Even tiny little gems like inserts or mini posters are a thing of the past. I mean I'm glad everything is so cheap nowadays, but I'd give anything to get the quality level of what we used to have. Of course my opinion is far different from most though... I think all anime there is viewed as collectors items. Not everyone and their mom goes around buying up every show released. I'm more of a quality over quantity kinda dude. Same thing with the car, built with quality in mind.
