After seeing Ninja Assassin, I have no doubt this could be pulled off in terms of violence. The sexuality, on the other hand... Maybe. As long as it's quick and blatant, not like the softcore porn in Watchmen. Not sure how they'd handle the rape, though.

Am I the only american anime fan that thinks, as a fanbase, we need to just come together and forget about NInja Scroll? It's a remnant of a past of our fanbase in America that still gets latched onto way more than it should. It held back the advancement of anime in America for a good long while, too.
I'm sure people like it... whatever.
It's just whenever I hear about it, I think
"Uhg.. can't we just forget it exists."
I kind of feel the same about the original Ghost in the Shell, (Only much less so) but that's actually a decent movie, at least

otimus: If Afro Samurai and Gantz are held in reasonable regard, then there's nothing wrong with Ninja Scroll. I just hope Tse isn't the jerk who came up with the squid-less ending. OTOH, I'm not sure I'd like it if knew Hayter came up with it, too.

Why should we forget about them? That's like saying "ugh, I wish people would just forget about Citizen Kane" or any other movie people consider a classic. Plus, how did it hold back the advancement of anime in the US?

For the longest time, that was one of the main titles that was advertised (both by word of mouth, and with this stupid mail order anime video ad on cable channels) as what anime was all about: Violence and sex. Extreme violence. Extreme sex. Lots of outrated folk. Lots of wrong opinions about things, too. Kind of held onto the fandom for a long time, and even still had carried it's effects over into today.
Also, don't compare that to Citizen Kane

If anything, a good portion of the fanbase probably doesn't even what a Ninja Scroll is, so in that sense it has been forgotten.
Personally, I'm glad that I rented it at Blockbuster when I did. But we need a Blu-ray release now.
And I'm not looking forward to a live-action adaption. Give me the sequel instead.

Ninja scroll is the gate way anime a ton of my friends were introduced to. What, in this day and age can you possibly use for a gateway title now? Bakemonogatari?, Kara no Kyokai?, Death Note? Code Geass? Eden of the East? All that shit is great to existing anime fans, but they aren't stand alone gateway titles. Ninja scroll did just that, and deserves some sort of honor like, (lol) Live-action.
A sequel is needed but seems like it's never going to happen.Live action it is.

Softcore porn? There have been R-rated movies with more explicit sex scenes than Watchmen! Are you suggesting that super-heroes shouldn't have sex? I hope you're not allying yourself with those soccer moms who took their 6-year-olds to see Watchmen in spite of the huge "R" on the posters and elsewhere only to storm out of the theater 20 minutes into the showing with the little ones in tow muttering something along the lines of "superhero movies should be family-friendly".
BTW, Zack Snyder said he was going to be as faithful as possible to the original source material in the graphic nove, and for the most part, he succeeded.

No. In fact, I love watching porn and am not afraid to admit I had a huge crush on Psylocke back in the day and wanted to see her do all sorts of dirty things. I also hate kids, will never have 'em, and think those moms are idiots, as are most married/"family-oriented" Americans. I just thought from a screenplay standpoint that this scene in particular threw off the pacing of the movie.

I know, and I agree. Maximum Movie Mode is a terrific feature. Glad they left out the Black Freighter stuff and changed up the ending. I didn't care much for the squid.

Just so you know there's a new spiffy Psylocke PVC figure being released soon Tony. I have to agree that the actual sex scene itself was just a bit off pace. I mean when Dan and Laurie were at his place that moment there felt more natural for something to happen. After they save the people from the burning building and are aboard Icarus it just felt....thrown in for the sake of it and not to assist in the budding romance. Just my opinion. As far as the Rape scene in Ninja Scroll I almost wonder if they'd omit it. You know how American audiences are squeamish about that Tony.

I'm just surprised the ANN encyclopedia has an entry for Ray Freaking Bradberry.

Watchman was a decent enough movie, but it lost a lot of the graphic novel's subtlety.
Luckily, Ninja Scroll has no subtlety.

That's quite interesting. I didn't care for Watchmen myself. I found it added too much flash and stripped out a lot of the subtlety. That said, it obviously tried really hard to be faithful to the source and the source in this case, Ninja Scroll, is super flashy. Subtlety...not so much. This was originally the adaptation I was most skeptical about but based on this, it could shape up to be a pretty solid movie. I would love to see Zack Snyder direct.
EDIT: Penguintruth beat me too it.

Does it absolutely have to have rape to be Ninja Scroll though? I mean...sure it does actually play an important role in parts of the plot but couldn't they tone it down to something short of outright rape and have it still work?

Yeah...That might be a wee bit more information than what was requested.

I know. It's like, why can't people latch onto up to date stuff to form their negative sterotypes. I for one have always wanted people to assume I'm either and an hyperactive teen or a pedophile.

...Jeez. If you think Ghost in the Shell is too violent/sexual what the heck is okay? I mean, yeah there's a fair bit of nudity but it's all very functional and there's no actual sex. I mean, what do you want to do? Get rid off all anime that's more than PG13? And honestly, is this really so important that it's worth 'forgetting' something as great as GitS? I mean Ninja Scroll is one thing. It's great fun but not what I'd call an artistic gem. Ghost in the Shell is a classic though.

Actually, I don't think that at all about Ghost in the Shell.
I meant in how that was the poster child of "what anime is" for the longest time.

Wouldn't be so sure about this one. True, the film is in kind of a production limbo, but remember that Kawajiri's last three directorial projects - VHD: Bloodlust, Program (from the Animatrix), and the Highlander anime, plus the Ninja Scroll TV show (which he wrote) were funded by American companies who felt that there's an audience for his stuff in the US (and were proven to be absolutely right). If Madhouse can't pull the film on their own, I'm sure some US distributor will come up with the financial incentive to move on with the project.
