Well, whoever has it will get my money when they release it on Blu-ray.

My bet is FUNimation has scored another big title. If they have that's a nice title for them to have and I'll be waiting for the release.

Bang Zoom is dubbing it though and FUNi doesn't use their studios for dubbing.

why are they redubbing it? I didn't think the ADV Dub was bad. I have always felt that ADV has taken good care of their Makoto Shinkai properties!

I agree. I thought the dubs were well done.

They're "redubbing" it because this is an unfounded rumor... how bout we wait for actual confirmation before starting to complain about things that might not be happening...
And yeah, if Funi got this, I'll be happy, cause I never got around to buying the ADV version.

Well, I don't see why it needs a re-dub. I thought the dub was perfectly fine and beautifully done just like the rest of the movie.

I haven't even gotten around to watching the release of it I do own, let alone a re-release. I have been vehemently warned away from watching the dub, though, so maybe good reason exists for it to get re-done.

It's best as a sub.
Bang zoom has a funky website. Check it out.

Agreed, the dub was fine. But if another distributor is buying this, ADVs dub may not be for sale, or may not be available. So the only way to get it out with a dub, is to re-dub it.
That is of course if any of this is true or not. It is still a rumor at this point.

It's a shame that this was confined to licensing hell, since it's one of the finest anime movies to come out in a long while. I was fortunate enough to grab an ADV copy back when it first released. I thought the dub was very well done, but if a new company has to re-dub it for legal reasons then I guess I can't complain.

Why the hell would anyone bother redubbing it in the first place? It's much cheaper to just use the original English audio track instead, since the film's already been dubbed! Just look at FUNi's release of Slayers--they didn't bother replacing the old English dub! So why would anyone do this with 5 Centimeters Per Second anyway? If it ain't broke, DON'T [expletive] FIX IT!
Of course, this wouldn't be any loss or gain to me as I already bought ADV's release.

I suppose I don't care too much about this; I think copies at online retailers are still widely available. I would like to see this re licensed though, just because my money normally goes to series over movies 9/10 times. Should I do that with titles that have lost their license in R1...probably not. But hey, who says I'm smart.

With the license denial from Bandai, I think it kinda weakens the whole rumor with this one. Maybe the redub thing is wrong too.
Besides, who'd re-license and redub this one besides either them or Funi? VIZ isn't likely to bother (and heaven help those who'd like to buy it if they did.) I doubt MB would pursue it, let alone redub it. Nozomi/Right Stuf might re-license it but it seems very unlikely they'd redub it. Manga Entertainment is a decent suspect but they seem to do very little in general and this seems, I don't know, too early for them. ADV lost it so it's not them.
That leaves who? A few major studios that dabble in rare anime releases and a hitherto unnamed newcomer?
I already own ADV's release so this doesn't present a big problem for me one way or the other but I am concerned.
