Whoa, that's big news. Not to mention the manga being big. Hope they do it justice.
Does anyone know if the novels are still being published? |

Has anyone read the 3 manga that Vertical put out? I like a lot of the other titles they publish, but really haven't heard anything about the Guin Saga manga.

This is indeed very surprising. I will be watching this when it comes out. I also hope that they do it justice.
In Japan, as far as I know the answer is yes. The series was originally planned to be 100 volumes. Sadly there is very little information about the series on the net. In the US, I believe Vertical intended to publish the first 5 volumes, unless sales said otherwise. |

Are we talking Conan the Barbarian, Detective Conan, or Conan O'Brien? |

Really? They published the first three books back in 2003 in rapid succession, and they only just release four and five in May and July of this year. I read the first three back when they first came out and I loved them. I didn't even know four and five had been published though. I need to get my hands on them now. I'm excited for this. I think this will be the anime Twelve Kingdoms fans have been waiting for. Well, aside from more TK, of course. |

I have read the three novels that Verticle put out. They took me about three hours to read each and are really short. The series reminds me of Utawarerumono in scenario and cast. The setting reminds me more of Bastard or the crazier parts of Berserk. The series is very high fantasy with magic and wacky monsters in every chapter. I wouldn't say it is good enough for me to struggle with the Japanese versions of the rest of the series but I didn't realize 4 and 5 were finally out. |

I remember reading an article three or four years ago about plans for a Guin Saga anime, nice to hear it's still in the works.
There's a manga, too, a three volume sidestory about Guin as a king trying to stop a plague from wiping out his kingdom. |

Don't know much about the series except that Kentaro Miura (Berserk) called it a great influence on his works. And 122 volumes since 1979 (!) means it can't be bad.
Also, I love fantasy, especially stylish high and epic fantasy, the sword & sorcery kind. There are too few animes like these out there, so I'll savour every one of them. |

The fifth and final of the Guin Saga novels that Vertical planned on releasing came out in the last couple of weeks.
They aren't exactly thought provoking books, but the pacing moves nimbly enough that they serve as eminently readable fantasy novels for lapsed genre fans who no longer have patience for fantasy novels. The series is well crafted pulp, with hyper-competent characters jumping from one cliff hanger to the next. More Fritz Leiber or Robert E. Howard than Ryo Mizuno. In terms of the Berserk connection, and Kentaro Miura siting Guin as in influence, there's a discernible linage in the tones of the works. They share a spirit of dangerous people fighting through a very dangerous world. |

Thanks for the info. I do remember hearing 'Miura-san' (of 'Berserk fame) mentioned that 'Guin Saga' was one of his inspirations. He also mentioned that the series was almost 100 vols. and hoped that he could carry 'Berserk' that far. I was curious if what he said about 'Guin Saga' was true. Now from what you mentioned it is. It's surprising that we picked it up. That's a long series. Well, one thing is for sure the creators try to give you a lot for you buck. |
