The song MIRROR isnt even close to death metal. Death metal consists of screaming/growling, almost no singing along with fast paced double bass, and heavy distorted guitar play.

Many people confuse death metal and grind core. Most die hard fans are upset they going softer. I don't see them going soft.

As I understand it, they are Despair and Ray so they have the dark and light sides to them, this is them enjoying the otherside more.

They're a pretty decent band in my opinion. I had the pleasure of seeing them a few months ago on the Taste of Chaos tour, but admittedly I hadn't heard of them until they went on stage.

They are neither soft nor extremely hardcore in my opinion, but my musical tastes go across the map, from Led Zeppelin to Children of Bodom.

Yep, not death metal. I'll grant that there are a few parts on some songs (like the beginning of the song "Mirror") that remind me a little of Dark Tranquillity (a Melodic Death Metal band) but no song really comes close to truly being death metal. Of course, when I think of death metal I think of bands like Cannibal Corpse, Nile and Suffocation. Now THAT is death metal.

I think it would be more accurate to call them metalcore or even a straight up hard rock band. The guitar centered sound, heavy bass, fast drumming AND the clean, sometimes, soft vocals with some screaming and especially the breakdowns that come mid-song, like on Angeldust, are very characteristic of metalcore.

All that said; they have some good stuff. I'm going to have to find their CD somewhere. Thanks for the review, I'm not sure I would've heard of them otherwise.

They also played in San Jose, CA during one Fanimecon. Though they weren't part of the con. I remember liking the concert quite a bit.

I'll have to look into the CD.

I'm not really sure where people are reading that I said they *are* death metal. I said they are pseudo-death metal....I said almost death metal....I said on the way to death metal.....but not actual death metal. And yes, there is a lot of screaming/growling going on in some of these songs. However, it's the singing parts that kept me from calling it actual death metal.

I had the pleaure of seeing them twice on the Taste of Chaos Tour and actually having a quasi conversation with Zero the bassist (he barely spoke any english at all. One of their roadies was translating back and forth for a bit) outside their bus when I was taking a walk down the beach in Asbusy Park, NJ that night.

I really like their sound but after a while, it all washes together. I have to really be in the mood to listen to them anymore.

But they really rocked live. They have an awesome stage presence and sounded good to boot. At the meet and greet they were a bit weird. They would not let anyone take pictures (as where MUCC and The Underneath were more than happy to) and they would only sign for a short period of time and than leave. Odd fellows really.

I was a bit nervous at first, but I think this review was pretty insightful. Couldn't agree more on Kaleidoscope; the vocals were really nice, but the sound overall really irked me.

Let me explain; I don't hear any of that. There's nothing in their sound that I would describe as "close to death metal" or "almost death metal" because they do not have any songs, in part or in whole, that make me think of death metal bands like Cannibal Corpse or Suffocation. Futhermore, they have very few, if any, of the basic characteristics of death metal, i.e. low tuned, heavily distorted guitars, rapid fire machine-gun like drumming, or low pitched growling vocals.

Um, a lot of their songs on this disc have low pitched growling vocals and that is where I made the connection, especially in the drum heavy songs.

I got to see them on Taste of Chaos, they blew me away. I love this CD. It's more "polished" than Coll:set. I think it's the mark of a good album when your favorite song changes, rather than having only one or two faves.

I would call them Goth metal.

They do have some goth influence but I would classify them as Industrial Metal.

First off I would like to thank Cassandra for writing this review. Its nice to see someone talking about an aggressive visual Jrock band that has nothing to do with anime.

And to clear things up, D'ray first came to America during the Infectious Mania Tour in 2005. Thats where I first saw them at Sugoicon.

Personally, I enjoy their more aggressive songs. Angeldust was definitely my favorite track off their new CD. But hey, music is opinion based so its cool if people think different. Their newest single, Brilliant, was just released in Japan and it doesn't have as dark a sound but is still a really good song thats worth checking out.

Cassandra, thank you from me too!

It's a little weird to me that you have often reviewed hard rock records even though that type of music doesn't seem to be your preference. And yet..... they are really informative.

Even though your review for Mirror was only lukewarm, I'm now interested in buying this CD based on your comments. Very Happy
