Huh. Never heard of it but I'm glad they're cracking down on these sites so the original creators can get their due.

thats likely not happening.

sure some of the people who use em might of paid for the content, but like the tv/game piracy claims of "we lost [x] amount to piracy" its not a factual statement.

I do not condone it, but piracy is a result of being simple w/ no real downside for end user.
However just because someone CAN pirate something (be it games, tv, manga, etc) doesn't mean that person would have paid for the content if it wasn't an option (thus no change in the profit to maker either way).

Again I don't condone it but other side of coin is content that never gets translations can only be enjoyed doing it (this is honestly why I wish "ai" would advance to make translating easy so people can actually buy whatever language content and just have it translated to enjoy so both user & creator no longer need worry about it as both get what they want in end)

on a more realist view while good to take it down if the internet history has taught me one thing its that you can't remove piracy its effectively a hydra (look at music, film, and torrenting which have been issues since 90's and remain issue today)

Yeah, this is the first time I've heard of this news too (I found an article via Strait Times that ANN seem to have based this article on from Dec 17). But then again, I've been hearing in the last few years SK has been cracking down on piracy and counterfeit merchandise, particularly counterfeit K-pop merchandises. So I'm not that surprised that this is happening.

These sites were targeting the domestic audience, they weren't hosting translations.

I can speak most knowledgeably about the game industry, but also know a lot about the anime industry, and piracy is nowhere near the problem it used to be. Games used to lose a lot of money to piracy (and GameStop, but that's another discussion) but what finally reduced piracy was platforms like Steam going into areas where piracy was a big problem. Lo and behold, once games were available legally and easily, piracy dropped off dramatically. With widespread digital distribution, it has greatly reduced the overall impact to the industry.

You can see this anime too. I piracy/fansubbing gone? No. But easy access (yes, it all could not be easier on you kids. Don't make me go yell a cloud about the olden days) to almost everything - same day simulcast, dubs galore, and easy streaming means people don't have to hunt for what they want to see.

One other factor that I think gets overlooked - and I'm genuinely curious to hear what you youngin's think of this - is that there is an awareness that you need to support the artists you like. Whether its music, tv, film, anime, comics, or what have you, if you don't support these works somehow, they'll go away. This can be buying a t-shirt at a concert, licensed merch at a convention, legal streaming, or any other number of ways.

This was around but not in quite the same way before, frankly, Napster came along in 1999 or 2000. When downloading music illegally started, there was not a lot of support for the musicians - the business side was out of site, and the deal was entirely transactional.

I'm over-simplifying a complex issue, but I am curious what other people (young and old) think about that.

I have a question that has nothing to do with how useful it is to police this activity. Where was the picture in the article taken from? The only reason I asked is I want to be sure I'm understanding this picture correctly. Is there literally a guy wearing a uniform that says "copyright crime" on the back like that and was this a picture from the bust? If so, it's kind of humorous as I'm picturing this Korean squad running into this house, people outside watching the Copyright squad take down some pirates. Or was this a picture of the Copyright command center coordinating the largest takedown in history or whatever? I don't know why, but it just strikes me as a bit funny.

While I'm always in favor of anything that gives the official Webtoon platform/app the finger (it is, without a doubt, the single most scummy, scammy, parasitically monetized piece of shit I've seen maybe ever in this industry), booooo on them for trying to make money off of this.

In a world, where capitalism isn't being TOO greedy. Then yes, this would hugely benefit the OG creators. But more than likely the creators won't see much of this revenue, it is more so going towards the very top.

Also, we won't even see a improvement in the quality of the product, because that means less revenue for the Top Brass. Funny thing is, it took illegal websites for the manga/anime industry to start pushing more for better quality.

Lastly, I'm not a fan of robinhood like behavior, but I understand why it is done and it happens. I be mad if someone stole my stuff, but I do my best to not be greedy so I wouldn't put myself in that situation.
