Okay, I really want to know what these Crescendolls plushies look like. I can't find them on the Daft Punk store with the other 5555 merch or in other press releases. Does anyone know anything about those, or have a link to where/how they're releasing?

Well, seems like it ain't a "remaster", but rather the notoriously shitty upscale from the DVD resolution with the use of AI - if there is any indication by their official site and screenshots where you can see the artifacts and smearing all over the place on certain frames.

You don't even need to zoom in to see how bad it looks. It's immediately apparent with the over sharpened lines making them stand out too much. I am going to guess that the original masters from Toei were lost to time. It's hard to tell if it was "digipaint" since it was 2003, which would explain the need for the (bad) upscaling.

It's never looked good because even the DVD release was converted to NTSC from PAL.

That's a bummer.

This is what you get when you decide to upscale early digipaint anime and your name isn't Discotek Media. Looks almost as picasso-esque as our german Urotsukidoji Blu Ray """"remaster"""".
At least the old Blu-Ray of 5555 was a hands-off kinda version, where they just took the SD footage and directly upscaled it to HD without applying any sort of weird filters. Sure it had some visual artifacts that stemmed from the low res source, but at least it looked like it was drawn by human beings and didn't melt the characters hairs and eyes together or let the outlines bleed all over the place. How could they look at the results and remotely think that this is an improvement? Am I crazy? Do people, who work in this industry, actually not see that this looks absolutely abysmal?
If you don't know what you are doing, just don't.

Pretty sure it's a producer who has their hands on the pursestrings that went for the AI upscale because it's cheaper than paying someone to do it instead.

Just remember: the suspiciously cheap all-region DVDs from South America you can find on eBay are actually very likely to be legit because the distributor there made way way too many discs.

Actually it’s older than 2003. Afterall Toonami aired it twice in 2001.

This makes me extremely sad at how lazy they were as a fan of both Daft Punk & of Leiji Matsumoto.
