Quote: | I certainly wouldn't have pegged this relatively brief golf story from Nakaba Suzuki. |
"Brief"? Rising Impact is 17 volumes long, and was literally Suzuki's longest manga overall until Seven Deadly Sins eventually surpassed it. Sure, 17 kind of pales in comparison to a lot of Shonen Jump's biggest hits, but for a series that was literally first killed off after only 15 chapters, before being given a second chance nine issues later (one of only a handful of manga to be given a second chance in Jump, in general), I think 17 volumes is far from "brief".

Truthfully, the toughest bit about Rising Impact to me was the amount of uncomfortable jokes about a third grader marrying a fully grown adult woman that hit the moment episode two starts. The English dub doesn't make Gawain's voice any more tolerable either.
I've been watching all the golf anime just to compare/contrast them all but I couldn't keep forcing myself on this one past Episode 3. Perhaps others will enjoy it more, but it was difficult to even watch from my standpoint.

I mean, I think it's just a cheap Fire Emblem reference? Especially since the tellius FE games that Ike is in had the whole Beorc vs Laguz (Human vs Demihuman) subplot and Ik sided with Laguz regularly

Oh, you can't stand Kuno's voice either?! So glad I'm not alone in this. I know she's just doing a job, and I'm sure she's a perfectly nice person IRL, but good lord, every single time I hear her talk in anything, her voice literally hurts my ears every time she tries to do that unsustainably high pitched chipmunk voice. Seriously, she always sounds like she lives in a tank full of helium. How in the world does she keep doing that without losing her voice? Being autistic and having auditory sensitivities doesn't help with this, and I know that's a me problem.

The Strongest Magician in the Demon Lord's Army was a Human
I will watch this one when it comes out, but disappointed that revenge was not the motivating factor for joining the Demon Lord's Army. Hopefully, there will be a compelling backstory for that.
Rising Impact
The anime 'Saki' knew how to make mahjong exciting, and based on the reviews for 'Rising Impact', they haven't done that yet.

In what context are these jokes being made and is it really that huge of an amount. I can see a child speaking that to an adult and it being treated as cute, and maybe the adult teasing the child about that comment. But you make it sound like outsiders are making those comments.

The Strongest Magician in the Demon Lord's Army was a Human and Rising Impact both look like more pig slop to me. This anime season is such a bummer.

God yes, I just watched both and Rising Impact just feels like a crappier version of Birdie Wing.
The Strongest Magician in the Demon Lord's Army on the other hand... Is it any wonder why I want A-Cat to stop getting work? Visually it's somehow worse than their contribution last season (and Highspeed Etoile was already one of the worst looking shows of this year), and the whole thing is basically talking heads with the occasional CGI army popping in. Again, what is it with this company and producing awful first episodes?

Raijingu Inpakuto (Rising Impact)
Nicholas Dupree in article wrote: | ...Gawain himself is an obnoxious little twerp... |
Huge understatement. When Gawain was blocking traffic in the crosswalk, I was hoping Truck-kun would run him over, but no such luck.
James Beckett in article wrote: | I will give Rising Impact this: It is heaps better than Tonbo! |
Were we watching the same shows? Tonbo! was cute and relaxing, while watching Gawain was making me reconsider if child protection laws are really a good thing (I would have cheered if a bear in the forest ate him).
In anime, Cute Girls>>Un-cute Boys.
James Beckett in article wrote: | Usually, though, we see an emphasis on father/child dynamics; it's not every day that you get this same setup with an adult woman as the lead. |
NGE did it much better with Misato Katsuragi and Shinji Ikari (those who found Shinji annoying have not met Gawain).
James Beckett in article wrote: | I've also seen much better Adult/Kid Odd-Couple Anime... |
Usagi Doroppu (Bunny Drop) was better, even if one knows how the manga ends.
Rising Impact is a one (episode) and done for me, and I will wait for Sorairo Yūtiriti (Sorairo Utility) to watch another golf anime (I enjoyed the short film). HAM!

On the one hand I can totally understand how people can find Misaki Kuno's voice grating but on the other hand Tama's voice lives in my head and emerges when I see certain words like "battle".
But yeah, I do wonder how she doesn't damage her voices with some of her roles..... She definitely puts in a lot of effort.
Anyway, somehow the news of an anime adapting an Arthurian golf manga where the protag goes to Camelot golf school and meets people named after characters from the legends slipped my attention. Not that I'd watch it anyway, but it sure is a concept.

:sigh:
Whenever I read these things, I always get the distinct impression that, outside of the one or two subgenres each reviewer likes to the point it can do no wrong, everyone seriously hates 95% of all anime from the past three decades, and takes a distinct pride in making that contempt as clear as humanly possible.
Sure, we've all seen thousands of anime over a span of decades, so it can be a little hard to muster much enthusiasm about reviewing the latest iteration of a concept done to death, but there is a difference between making an attempt at an objective evaluation of something you are bored by, and literally dripping disgust all over the screen while clawing at every issue you have with an entire genre that you feel you can expand into a paragraph.
Sure, Maougun Saikyou has so far done nothing that hasn't been done before, but no one is going to watch it expecting anything of the sort. It's a basic fantasy power-fantasy series, and makes no attempt to hide that. And, for what it is, it's perfectly fine. It doesn't do anything to elevate itself, but it doesn't do anything significantly wrong, either. It's a classic example of a Big Mac series - you know exactly what you are going to get. Attacking it for being exactly what it is supposed to be just seems petty. Especially after one episode.
And Pre-Cure has been going through the same motions for 20 years now, and I know for a fact some of you jump onto each new iteration like an addict in withdrawal into a mountain of white powder.
If you're going to hate a series from the moment you read the title, knowing you hate the entire category of anime it exists in, you are not qualified to review it - specially when you don't even try to hide it. When the entire review can be replaced with "SSDD, FML", everyone is better off with it not existing in the first place. I know, you are obligated to write it because it is your job, but also, it is your job, so be professional? Reading those impressions are seconds of my life I will never get back, and there wasn't a single line of value in the whole lot. A poop emoji would have been a significant improvement.
I really don't even know why I even bother coming here anymore...

Out of curiosity, I checked my spreadsheet, and there are currently seven Narou anime listed with "Strongest" in the title.
- Winter 2022: The Strongest Sage With the Weakest Crest
- Winter 2023: The Reincarnation of the Strongest Exorcist In Another World
- Summer 2023: Am I Actually the Strongest?
- Winter 2024: The Strongest Tank's Labyrinth Raids
- Summer 2024: The Strongest Magician in the Demon Lord's Army was a Human
-
Fall 2024: The Healer Who was Banished From His Party is Actually the Strongest
-
2025: Even Given the Worthless 'Appraiser' Class, I'm Actually the Strongest
Oof. On the plus side, only two more until we have ⑨ of them.
On the topic of Misaki Kuno… I dunno, I've never seen anyone complain about her performance in The Apothecary Diaries, though granted she isn't a main character there.

Nope, it's gone straight to Episode Reviews.

Strongest Magician seemed fine. We don't get too many stories from the "bad guys" point of view, though it seems like that's being softened with our very human (despite being raised by demons) MC. I'll give it another two episodes to see how it goes. The city building aspect and defending against the human army could be an interesting aspect if the story goes in that direction.
